A cancer diagnosis often comes out of nowhere. It hits like a ton of bricks. Your world stands still as you try to figure out what to do next. That’s what happened to our family when my wife, Trish, was diagnosed with breast cancer. We quickly learned how hard it was to navigate the healthcare system and coordinate care. Even with our access, network, knowledge, resources and diligence, it was a struggle. If it was difficult for us, how hard must it be for someone who doesn’t have all those things? This reality is the driving force behind The Hammond Family Center for Breast Surgery at Northwell Health. With everything life has given us, inspiration from the many people at NFP who give to help others, and a desire to elevate the standard of care for all, regardless of ability to pay, we are proud to be realizing a dream that will positively impact women and families. Through education, process refinements and the immensely talented team at Northwell, we will work to improve awareness, experiences and outcomes, from breast cancer screening to diagnosis to surgery to postoperative care. Trish and I are looking forward to sharing more about The Hammond Center and what we’ve learned. As Trish said at the launch event last month, “information is power” – it informs decisions and brings clarity to the risk/reward conversations along the way. If you have questions, want to get involved, or have a friend or loved one who may be struggling with their breast cancer treatment, please reach out. A big thank you to Michael Dowling, Daniel Baker, Oren Lerman, MD, Dr. Lauren Cassell and everyone who has generously supported the launch. And most of all, thank you to Trish for her courage, strength, vision and love. It is a privilege to make this dream a reality with her.

When Inside Edition correspondent Alison Hall covered Olivia Munn’s breast cancer journey, she never imagined it would lead to a life-changing moment of her own. Through her reporting, Alison met with Lenox Hill breast surgeon Dr. Sharon Rosenbaum Smith and took the same risk assessment test that uncovered Munn's diagnosis. The results revealed Alison had an elevated risk for breast cancer. After further imaging and a biopsy, she was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), an early-stage breast cancer. With incredible strength and courage, Alison not only made the proactive decision to undergo a double mastectomy but also shared her story with the world to send a powerful message about the importance of early detection. We’re honored to be a part of her journey and support her in taking control of her health. Watch here: https://lnkd.in/evx8RjuU

Think robotic surgery means a robot does it all? Not quite. It’s actually a surgeon—fully in control—with the ultimate high-tech assist. General surgeon Dr. Rebecca Kowalski takes us behind-the-scenes in the OR to show us how robotic surgery works, from its 3D vision cart that keeps the entire team in sync, to the console where surgeons control every movement with pinpoint accuracy.
