As Americans sit down to celebrate Thanksgiving this week, the Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention and Human Security reflects upon the larger history of this holiday. We commend US President Joe Biden’s recent formal apology to Native American communities for the traumatic boarding schools that were part of official US policy for over 150 years. “The federal government has never, never formally apologized for what happened, until today,” Biden said in a speech on October 26 at the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona. “I formally apologize as President of the United States of America for what we did. I formally apologize.” To read the full statement, click here https://bit.ly/4fICjqG #Thanksgiving #JoeBiden

Connecting the global grassroots with the tools of genocide prevention.
关于我们
The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention has grown from the Iraq Project for Genocide Prevention and Accountability, which was launched in 2017 to address the need for long-term capacity building in genocide prevention in Iraq. In the wake of ISIS genocides, we saw an enormous grassroots interest in ending the cycle of violence and promoting a lasting peace. We are now bringing that work to the global grassroots.

Today, on the 1000th day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the?Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention? and Human Security stands in solidarity with the Ukrainian people, who have endured a relentless assault on their sovereignty, humanity, and cultural heritage. Ukrainian resilience has become a beacon of hope for all those fighting for self-determination and against imperialist aggression. The Ukrainian cause reflects the universal human right to live in peace, free from aggression and cultural erasure. To read the full statement, click here. https://bit.ly/3AE6tfC

The Lemkin Institute for Genocide Prevention has come under fire recently for “desecrating” Raphael Lemkin’s name with our work on the genocide in Gaza, criticism that is based on disinformation and a failure to understand the work of genocide prevention. We were named to honor Raphael Lemkin’s legacy and welcome discussions with Lemkin’s family members. Please read our statement to learn more about us and what we do. It is almost never popular to call out genocide as it is happening or to point to red flags as the process is getting started, but without such work, the world has little chance of survival and no chance of rising above this terrible crime. We will continue with our mission to create a shared global language of genocide prevention and we hope everyone will join us in the movement to end genocide once and for all. All human beings, everywhere, deserve to live out their lives in their collective identities without facing violence, humiliation, criminalization, dispossession, death, or erasure. Dr. Susanne @Schmeier : " What is Water Diplomacy? Water diplomacy can be defined as the use of diplomatic instruments to existing or emerging disagreements and conflicts over shared water resources with the aim to solve or mitigate those for the sake of cooperation, regional stability, and peace. Water diplomacy is about applying diplomatic instruments, not technical ones." [....] This buzz about water diplomacy has brought heightened attention to both water governance and water-related challenges and risks. However, water stakeholders from academia to policymakers to the media, have taken ‘water diplomacy’ to mean anything related to any work on water as a resource. The consequence of this confounding are issues in both the research and policy sectors which has constrained the potential of both. https://lnkd.in/e7Ju29XY #water #diplomacy #conflict #management

Excellent piece with concrete steps for transgender folks (and their families) to take in order to be prepared for whatever persecution looks like in the coming months. As a genocide scholar I can say that Erin Reed has precisely the right approach to anticipating and planning for a genocidal, anti-trans America.

Arakan Army (AA) Abducts Rohingyas, Seizes Mosque Loudspeakers in Maungdaw and Buthidaung In a recent wave of violence, the Arakan Army (AA) has detained over 110 Rohingyas across Maungdaw and Buthidaung, sparking fear and concern in these conflict-ridden communities. On October 11, 83 Rohingyas, including an elderly Islamic scholar, were abducted by AA forces as they attempted to escape fighting by crossing into Bangladesh, only to be forced back and detained under harsh conditions without access to medical care. On October 27, AA forces seized loudspeakers from mosques in Mingalar Gyi village, intending to use them for psychological warfare against the last Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP) battalion still active in Maungdaw. Meanwhile, AA’s October 28 raid on Kin Daung village in Buthidaung led to the abduction of over 27 Rohingya youths, who locals fear will be coerced into joining AA forces and used in the conflict. As violence and intimidation grow, the Rohingya community calls for urgent international attention to protect their safety and dignity amidst escalating hostilities. Ro Mayyu Islam

We demand that the international community hold Azerbaijan accountable for its despicable treatment of Armenian prisoners of war and hostages. We stand firmly that continued detention of Armenians will block the path of peace in the region. Say NO to COP29 in Azerbaijan! #COP29
