We are pleased to share that the Duan Center for Computing & Data Sciences at Boston University has been featured in Tradeline, Inc.'s article, "Boston University Builds One of the City's Largest Sustainable and Operationally Fossil-Fuel-Free Buildings" "Boston University Builds One of the City’s Largest Sustainable and Operationally Fossil-Fuel-Free Buildings -- The 350,000-sf Duan Family Center for Computing & Data Sciences at Boston University (BU) brings 3,000 students, faculty, and staff together daily inside a LEED platinum-certified 19-story structure that sits at the heart of the university’s main campus. By replacing most of the building’s Portland cement with other supplementary cementitious materials, installing triple-glazed windows and fins to reduce the solar load, and heating and cooling the building with geothermal boreholes paired with active chilled beams, the project team created one of the largest sustainable and operationally fossil-fuel-free buildings in Boston." February marked the end of an era at LeMessurier as we bid farewell to our dear colleague and friend, Scott R. Whitaker. After 40 years of dedication to the construction industry - working on some of the nation’s most iconic landmarks - Scott is stepping into the next chapter of his journey. ? From draftsman to business owner, preservationist to mentor, Scott has worn many hats throughout his illustrious career. His contributions to projects like the U.S. Capitol, Fort Jefferson, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art are nothing short of extraordinary. His legacy isn’t just in the buildings he helped preserve, but in the generations of craftsmen, colleagues, and mentees he has inspired along the way. ? In 2020, we were lucky to welcome Scott and his team to the LeMessurier family, where his infectious personality and passion for his work helped us continue our pursuit of growth and excellence. For five years, Scott’s leadership in our Enclosure business has been invaluable, and his impact on our team will be felt for years to come. ? As Scott transitions into the next phase of his life, we are thrilled to see him embrace his passions outside of the engineering world - fly-fishing in Maine and Montana and spending quality time with his loved ones. We have no doubt that his next adventure will be as impactful and fulfilling as the last. ? Scott, thank you for everything you’ve contributed to LeMessurier and for the mark you’ve left on all of us. Your legacy will continue to inspire us as we move forward, building on the foundation you helped lay. ? We wish you all the best as you enjoy this well-earned next chapter! ? #LeMessurier #Leadership #Legacy #Mentorship #NewBeginnings

As mass timber continues to gain momentum, it's important to have reliable resources to share its benefits. We’re proud to have contributed to this comprehensive study, which examines mass timber construction in three U.S. regions: the Upper Midwest, Rocky Mountain Colorado, and the Southeast. Conducted over two years with support from a USFS Wood Innovation Grant, this study—led by SCB, LeMessurier, and Turner Construction Company—reimagines buildings in Minneapolis, Denver, and Atlanta, analyzing cost implications, schedule efficiencies, carbon impact, and key design considerations. Additionally, it includes a detailed mapping of the mass timber supply chain and its potential effects on U.S. forests. These white papers are intended as open resources for developers, architects, engineers, construction managers, city planners, and others looking to advance mass timber construction. At LeMessurier, we’ve always had a passion for numbers. Last Friday, on Pi Day (March 14th), we toasted to the beauty of math, engineering, and of course… pie! Everyone brought in their favorite pie (yes, any pie you wanted) — from classic apple to creative, out-of-the-box options. It was a great way to honor the constant that drives so much of what we do with a delicious twist. #PiDay #StructuralEngineering #LeMessurier

After an impressive 47 years of dedication, expertise, and innovation, Richard Henige retired at the end of 2024 from his role at LeMessurier. ? Richard’s engineering journey began at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he earned his Master’s degree while studying under the renowned structural engineer Bill LeMessurier. After graduating in 1977, he joined LeMessurier's firm and quickly established himself as a leader in the design and engineering of steel structures. The following year, he was selected to join the LeMessurier team that conducted a confidential engineering review of the Citicorp Center in New York. His remarkable role in this project, at such a young age, not only showcased his exceptional abilities but also demonstrated the trust placed in him by the highest levels - laying the foundation for what would become a truly outstanding career. ? Throughout his career, Richard has not only been a brilliant engineer but also a mentor, collaborator, and leader who has shaped the very fabric of the field. At LeMessurier, we value both the technical skills that define our work and the opportunity to engage in creative, collaborative activities that bring our teams together. For National Engineers Week last week, we decided to take on a fun and unique challenge: building the strongest structure using only newspaper and duct tape - designed to hold the weight of several Concrete and Revit Manuals. ? The results were impressive. Beyond the strong structures that emerged, the event highlighted the power of collaboration and innovative thinking that drives engineering excellence at LeMessurier. It was a reminder that engineering is not just about what we build, but how we approach every challenge, big or small. ? #NationalEngineersWeek #LeMessurier #StructuralEngineering?

Be sure to check out the Embodied Carbon series for structural engineers hosted by SEAMASS next month. The three-part series consists of a presentation and a panel discussion. https://lnkd.in/erdXHg7W Last year, I was in a workshop discussing how we can remove roadblocks to achieve zero embodied carbon (and beyond) for structures. One item was how to get the topic of embodied carbon in front of more structural engineers. I was inspired to organize an event to have engineers from leading structural engineering firms share their knowledge within our local professional organization. Special shout out to those who helped make this series happen: my colleague Eric S. Johnson, P.E., Director of the SEAMASS Board, and fellow presenters, who didn’t hesitate to volunteer to share their knowledge on the topic of embodied carbon: Julia Hogroian, Michael Scancarello, P.E., Patrick Kenny, P.E., Mark Webster. I appreciate the openness to share in the structural engineering community—we are all working towards a common goal, and it’s wonderful to be rowing together in the same boat!
