LeMessurier’s Eric S. Johnson, P.E. and Jiarong (Gawing) Chen joined HMFH Architects, Turner Construction, dignitaries, and the public to celebrate the opening of the Josiah Quincy Upper School. Students in the grades 6-12 school started this academic year in Boston’s newest public school building. The mayor, city councilors, school officials, state officials, and more lauded the building and the years long cooperative process that led to this day. Situated on a compact site in Chinatown, the Josiah Quincy Upper School is a high-rise building that stacks its various programmatic elements. The cafeteria and media center are located on the ground floor, while the gym, auditorium, and black box theater occupy the second floor and a mezzanine level. The academic floors on levels 3 through 6 are supported by transfer trusses that span over the gym and auditorium spaces, which are in turn supported by multi-story trusses in the building's perimeter. Despite the limited open space at street level, the school's roof features a landscaped oasis for students, offering views of the skyscrapers. As the project's design structural engineer, Associate Eric Johnson has been involved since the schematic design phase five years ago, guiding the project through design and construction. Meanwhile, Designer Jiarong Chen stepped up during construction to review thousands of steel shop drawings and other submittals. Eric's favorite projects are public-facing municipal buildings like schools and libraries, as he finds the community impact immensely rewarding. #StructuralEngineering?#BostonPublicSchools

We are delighted to share the recent completion of the Annex to the James M. Ashley and Thomas W.L. Ashley U.S. Courthouse in Toledo, Ohio. The newly constructed glass porch along Spielbusch Avenue pays tribute to Toledo’s distinguished history in glass manufacturing and serves as an inviting entry point for visitors to the four District courtrooms. The opening of the Annex marks a significant milestone, enabling major renovations to commence on the original 1932 courthouse. This transformation will preserve the historical building while enhancing its functionality for future generations. Last week, LeMessurier attended the award gala celebrating all the AEC professionals within the Professional Women in Construction Boston Chapter. It is exciting to see the organization's many accomplishments. The keynote speaker, Diana Fernandez Bibeau PLA, ASLA, was recognized for overcoming myriad obstacles to become the great leader and inspiration she is to everyone in the AEC industry. We are proud to be represented by Stephen Jones, Natasha Leipziger Mundis, EIT, and Emma Sauerwein, supporters of advancing and connecting women in the AEC industry.
