Which direction is the Renminbi (RMB) taking, and where will it take the rest of the world? Internationalization of the RMB: Status, Options and Risks The internationalization of the RMB is a long-term project that has evolved through several internal and external factors. What are China’s global financial policies? What are the consequences for the global financial environment? Which scenarios can be envisioned? ?? Bert Hofman(郝福满) and Johannes Petry answered these questions in the latest CKN report. Even though the international use of the RMB has only had a modest increase over the years, the internationalization of the currency could accelerate in several ways. When looking at domestic policies and international dynamics, four broad scenarios can be considered: 1. A rapid, transformative rise 2. A gradual, steady evolution 3. A reactive ‘great leap’ prompted by external pressures 4. A controlled safety-net prioritizing safety of international payments over swift liberalization. All of these scenarios have unique implications for the euro and European monetary sovereignty. ?? Want to learn more? What is the best approach for de-risking strategic supply chains? Dynamics of de-risking: Towards resilient supply chains for antibiotics, drones and the electricity grid in the Netherlands --- As the European Union is facing growing vulnerabilities due to economic dependencies on China, it must find ways to safeguard its vital sectors. As a consequence, the EU has launched a ‘de-risking’ agenda, aimed at reducing these economic dependencies while maintaining an open global economy. Which de-risking measures is the EU currently implementing, and what are their effects? How is China responding to this de-risking strategy? This new China Knowledge Network report, in collaboration with HCSS - The Hague Centre for Strategic Studies, examines Europe’s approach to de-risking, with a focus on three Dutch vital sectors: antibiotics, drones and electricity grid components. The report identifies vulnerabilities in the supply chains of these sectors, and explores various de-risking interventions to address these challenges. A big thank you to Irina Patrahau, Benedetta Girardi, Ron Stoop and Lennart Engel for writing and presenting this report! ?? Curious to learn more? Join this interesting lecture by prof. Iza Ding! The event is free of charge and open to the public. Details: ?? Wednesday March 19, 15:15 - 17:00 ?? Herta Mohr, Room 0.31, Witte Singel 27A, 2311 BG Leiden More details about the event and the speaker: https://lnkd.in/gcepUk2D After the Soviet Union collapsed and planned economies faded, studies on communism in the 20th century shifted toward authoritarianism in the 21st. Iza Ding argues that while political science has moved past communism, its core questions remain—only now under the label of "authoritarianism." Ideas once tied to communism still shape how we study authoritarian regimes today. Ding highlights two key links between these fields: the focus on how non-democratic regimes stay in power and the tendency to see authoritarian states and citizens in rigid opposites. She critiques this approach for relying too much on functionalist explanations and for forcing oversimplified contrasts between rulers and the ruled.
