Studies of sleep improve the understanding of health. Experts from Lehman College NSS Department of Psychology and HS2N Department of Social Work teamed with Empire State University Interim Dean Gina Torino (https://lnkd.in/e2DS_nUm) and published their findings: 'Sleep and mental health among youth experiencing homelessness: A retrospective pilot diary study.' Lehman College faculty researchers, Assistant Professor Mia Budescu, Associate Professor Amanda Sisselman-Borgia, and Psychology Chair Anne Reid (https://lnkd.in/eGm5JhCT) involved two students in the work (Nicole Holbrook BA and Dania Varela BA). Research is the proving ground of innovation. As Election Day nears in the United States, an NSS Sociology faculty member is deepening our shared understanding of the varied impacts of democracy on access to healthcare. Lehman College NSS Department of Sociology Associate Professor Devrim Yavuz most recent publication illuminates how the juxtaposition of informal and formal institutions has become central to debates about the quality of democracy in different country settings. How effective are today's artificial intelligence (AI) models for science education? It is an exciting question. In Summer 2024, Lehman College NSS undergraduates Richerly Paulino, Ashly Quezada, Alismeydis Bido Hernandez, and Martin Castro (pictured left to right below) took up the question as it applies to grading in chemistry. The group is advised by Patricia Gonzalez, Ph.D., Department of Chemistry. The group's initial project goal was to evaluate current AI capabilities to grade student solutions to open ended chemistry questions. Their progress and research plan were presented in seminar yesterday, September 25, 2024. The group reported their methodology to compare OpenAI ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Microsoft Copilot, and then shared their evaluation of grading with use of an AI-generated grading rubric, given their selection of ChatGPT, vs a human-made rubric. Preliminary data findings show promise for the value of AI to grade open ended questions. The next phase of the group's research plan is collaboration with NSS professors', using faculty grading rubics vs the group's ChatGPT rubric. Highlighting the remarkable ongoing work of Center for Smart Streetscapes (CS3) under the leadership of multiple institutions including Lehman College. Jennifer Laird, Assistant Professor in the NSS Department of Sociology, is the Primary Investigator for the Lehman Sub-Award 2022 - 2027 on this National Science Foundation (NSF) funded program. The total award to Lehman is $980K. Cheers for great success to all participants on the CS3 Student Leadership Council over the coming year including Emily Portalatín-Méndez ?!

NSS is proud to highlight 2024 faculty research team publications and grants https://lnkd.in/dyX7kFYi. Today's feature is the work of Columba de la Parra, PhD. Assistant Professor de la Parra is a 2024 NIH SuRE R16 grant award recipient. The funding is provided by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) of The National Institutes of Health. The grant funds the continuation of advanced cancer research and the training of students from all backgrounds as the next generation of skilled and innovative scientists. Blessing Ukandu is one student joining the research team this semester. Findings by collaborators from Lehman College, Columbia University and The Graduate Center, City University of New York were published earlier in 2024. The publication focuses on metabolic dysregulation of cancer cells and how it is linked to chemotherapeutic resistance. Since there are multiple mechanisms by which this metabolic switch occurs, the research on these mechanisms is highly promising and could ultimately offer new opportunities for the development of innovative therapies to treat advanced breast cancer characterized by dysregulated metabolism. #LehmanProud #BreastCancerResearch https://lnkd.in/d5fsPG3W
