Just back from co-teaching the Graduate Professional Seminar at Missouri School of Journalism with Pete Pachal. Much gratitude to Professor Jim Flink for inviting us to lead this workshop with such brilliant and committed mid-career journalists and communicators. Together, we explored the impact of #AI on our world. We looked at scenarios of AI's use in war and terrorism, on college campuses, and in grieving and memory. The assignment we gave the students was to create a reporting plan on one of the ethical scenarios outlined. We learned about the use of an AI app for healing created by one of the survivors of Parkland; the use of AI to recreate milestones missed due to the pandemic; the use of AI in mapping characteristics of a mass shooter's brain; and the use of AI in digital mausoleums. Each team blew us away. They looked at these scenarios with a critical eye, probing for issues of equity and access, and holding power to account. It reminds me that no matter what scenario we are exploring, be it #AI or #newsdeserts, the #journalistscreed, written by the first Dean of the Missouri School of Journalism is a guiding ethos for our news and information business.
