Today, the Montana House unanimously voted "yes" on HB 475! The bill restricts the unnecessary, traumatizing, and medically hazardous practice of shackling inmates who are giving birth. This legislative session, Legal Voice's Robin Turner and Mariel Vander Schuur are fighting tirelessly against a wave of anti-transgender bills. Lawmakers are trying to criminalize gender-affirming care for youth, exclude transgender women from sports, sanction misgendering at work and school, and block transgender people from using restrooms and other public spaces that align with their gender identity. These attacks on the rights and dignity of transgender people go against the Montana Constitution, medical consensus, and basic human decency. But, as advocate SK Rossi said in a recent legislative hearing, "It doesn’t matter what you do in these rooms, trans and nonbinary people are going to continue to exist.” Transgender people deserve to live openly, safely, and with dignity. We stand with them. ?? #mtleg

Right now, Washingtonians who lose a pregnancy may encounter stigma and barriers to care. Even though Washington state law prohibits it, they may be criminally investigated or charged with a crime after losing a pregnancy. And they may lose a pregnancy because of inadequate health care in jail, prison, or detention. By passing the Dignity in Pregnancy Loss bill, we can begin to address these harms and ensure that every Washingtonian who experiences pregnancy loss is treated with respect.
