The mission of Legal Services of the Hudson Valley is to provide free, high quality counsel in civil matters for poor and low-income individuals and families who cannot afford to pay an attorney where basic human needs are at stake. Legal Services of the Hudson Valley was founded in 1967, and is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing free, high-quality legal counsel in civil matters where basic human needs are at stake for poor and low-income families and individuals who cannot afford an attorney. With the gap separating those who can and cannot afford legal representation widening each day, we work to ensure that everyone has access to justice, regardless of their ability to pay. As the only provider of comprehensive civil legal services to all seven counties of the lower and mid-Hudson Valley (Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Rockland, Orange, Ulster and Sullivan), LSHV is proud to impact tens of thousands of people each year. We are the recipient of Legal Services Corporation funding for the region and provide a full array of services to low-income individuals and families to meet their legal needs for the “essentials of life.". The work we do each day provides justice to tens of thousands of our neighbors who have nowhere else to turn. Our funding empowers us to: ?Save children from neglect; ?Protect survivors of domestic violence; ?Defend seniors against abuse; ?Serve veterans on the home front; ?Support the rights of the disabled; ?Keep families in their homes. In 1967, Legal Services of the Hudson Valley originally incorporated as Westchester Legal Services. In 1995 we added Putnam and Dutchess Counties, and in 2004, Rockland, Orange, Ulster and Sullivan Counties. Our name has evolved to reflect the geographic expansion of our service area. We serve these seven counties from ten offices including White Plains (corporate office), Yonkers, Mount Vernon, Peekskill, Spring Valley, Kingston, Newburgh, Monticello, Goshen, and Poughkeepsie.

LSHV would like to recognize Fried Frank for its role as the anchor of the Pro Bono Housing Advice Clinic. Under the leadership of Pro Bono Counsel Laura Sinrod, Fried Frank has supplied over 100 volunteers in 2024 to provide legal advice and brief services to clients who would not otherwise be served by LSHV due to capacity constraints. In addition to meeting with clients virtually during the clinic and providing advice and strategy for their housing cases, Fried Frank volunteers prepare pro se documents for clients to file in court, draft letters to landlords, and provide information on a variety of resources. Some volunteers have provided additional limited scope representation to negotiate with landlord’s counsel or get information from an agency. These extraordinary volunteers have improved outcomes for tenants in eviction court and provided housing stability for countless LSHV clients. LSHV is grateful for Bond Schoeneck & King’s (BSK) service to our clients through our pro bono limited-scope advocacy program. Each summer, BSK staff attorneys and summer associates partner with LSHV to extend our reach further than LSHV would ever be able to do alone. For instance, with the help of BSK attorneys and summer associates, we have been able to get landlords to address abhorrent living conditions, allowing our clients to live with dignity and safety. BSK also helped bridge the gap between a client and the agency that administered her rental subsidy when a breakdown of communication occurred, ensuring that our client maintained the subsidy and giving her peace of mind. BSK has also helped negotiate more equitable lease provisions at the time of lease signing. And the list goes on. We thank BSK from the bottom of our hearts for the compassion the firm’s attorneys show our clients and for the competent representation that they offer to our program, year after year. Juliana LoBiondo is a partner in the Newburgh, NY firm LoBiondo Law Offices, where she has dedicated her law practice to Divorce, Family Law, and Family Mediation for the past 34 years. Juliana is always eager to help LSHV clients – over the past 15 years, she has assisted more than ten LSHV clients in matrimonial actions! This year alone, Juliana has twice proactively reached out to the Pro Bono Unit to offer free divorce representation for Spanish-speaking clients who did not have the means to afford an attorney in Orange County. And, because Juliana and her office staff are bilingual, these clients did not need to rely on translators when discussing the emotional issues that arise in matrimonial cases.
