There was nothing Air Force Pararescuemen William Pitsenbarger loved more than a dangerous adventure. As a high school junior, he tried to join the Green Berets, but his parents insisted that he finish school first. Pitsenbarger followed his parents’ wishes, then after graduating, informed them that he would be leaving to go to Air Force training. “When?” they asked. “Tonight,” he answered. Throughout his military career, Pitsenbarger was a positive force, there to lighten the mood when things got dark and never had a bad thing to say on a mission. He was always ready to ‘go in’ and rescue the men on the battlefield and the operation "Abilene" rescue was no different. ‘Pits’ as the men called him, went in, an act that astonished the men on the ground. ‘It was a suicide mission,’ most thought, ‘why would he leave the relative safety of his helicopter?’ Pitsenbarger moved on the ground, making the rescue more efficient with an experienced medic on the ground. He stayed on the ground into the night. When the troop had to move, he created stretchers to move the injured, when they needed supplies, he was the first to volunteer. Therefore, in the middle of the night, when the noise stopped, no one had to look up from their hiding places to know that Pits had been killed. The lost battalion of World War I consisted of three battalions and two machinegun companies. These soldiers had been trapped by the German military and they had begun to lose hope when airmen Erwin Bleckley and Harold Goettler came to the rescue. They took on the dangerous mission of flying to the lost battalion to supply aid. As the two men flew over the ravine where the battalion was thought to be, they realized they would need to drop even lower to find these lost soldiers. With their aircraft’s wings vibrating against the laws of aerodynamics, struts whining against the whipping wind, and the ship itself seeming to almost skim the ground, the two took on the enemy as they hunted for the battalion. Pass after pass and the airmen could not find the soldiers. They decided to go for one more pass, though the plan was clearly worse for wear. As they moved over through the ravine, enemy machine-guns fire shattered the windscreen and with it the could of Bleckley’s gun halted. Goettler looked over to see blood pouring out of his partner’s body then looked down to see it flowing out of his own. Determined, Goettler made his way to a French airship. The plane landed and the French were shocked. The men inside were both deceased, but the plan had made a perfect landing. Erwin Bleckley and Harold Goettler, the Ghost Plane crew, were posthumously awarded Medals of Honor. Toys for Tots does not publish a list of appropriate toys to donate. If such a list were created, most would follow it, resulting in a limited selection of items to distribute in each community. We would rather our donors consider what might be an appropriate gift for their own child/relative, purchase the item, and donate to Toys for Tots.

  • When Corporal Dakota Meyer’s squad moved ahead of him, Meyers had no idea they were about to march right into an ambush. Upon hearing of the trap, he and another Marine loaded up the first gun truck they could find with Meyers taking the gunner position. They moved in and point-blank fired at the enemy, taking them out in equal measure with a rifle and a machine gun. The two soldiers made trips back to the safe point to drop off wounded Afghan soldier, then went straight back into the fray. On their fifth trip, Corporal Meyers exited the truck to locate and recover the bodies of his team members.
