Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana?ole's legacy is truly profound — heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Hawai?i, prince of the House of Kalākaua, and later territorial delegate to the United States Congress. In 1919, as a delegate, Kuhio authored the first Hawaiian Statehood Bill. He also won passage of the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1920, creating the Hawaiian Homes Commission and setting aside 200,000 acres (810?km2) of land for Hawaiian homesteaders. ? His advocacy for Native Hawaiians, particularly through the Hawaiian Homes Commission Act of 1920, laid a foundation for efforts to support and uplift the Hawaiian people that continue to this day. His dedication to statehood, self-governance, and the well-being of his people solidified his reputation as "Ke Ali?i Maka?āinana"—the People’s Prince. ? Prince Kūhiō Day serves as a powerful reminder of his contributions and the resilience of Native Hawaiians in preserving their identity and rights.
