Undergraduate students from Building and Construction Technology program, within the Department of Environmental Conservation toured the School of Public Health & Health Sciences (SPHHS) Hub project. It was an exciting tour, with a student intern from Fontaine Builders co-leading the project tour, who is a junior in the BCT program along with the assistant superintendent who is an alum of the program who was also part of the project team along for the tour. The project manager for Fontaine Builders led the project tour, explaining the construction means of methods along with the sequencing of the construction, educating these future leaders in the field of design and construction for building construction. Alexander Schreyer, the BCT program director, setup this tour for his students in his course, Construction Materials and Methods.?This was an excellent learning experience for the students, to learn about construction materials and how they are procured, installed and inspected as part of capital construction, being performed and managed by our campus partners, UMBA, and UMA Planning, Design & Construction dept. Back in January, we successfully completed the first phase of the teaching labs project, which included both light and heavy service labs, along with new classrooms and exciting collaboration spaces for students. The new accessible fume hoods, along with upgraded supply and exhaust mechanical infrastructure, allow simultaneous use and significantly enhance students' ability to conduct experiments safely and efficiently. This semester, more than 1,200 students are using these spaces, and we are thrilled with the project's success! The Thornton Tomasetti #Boston office is proud to be the Structural Engineer of Record for their award winning project, the Harvard University District Energy Facility, and we had a blast celebrating their achievement at this year’s BSA Gala. Established in 1921 in memory of Boston architect J. Harleston, this is the highest honor awarded by the Boston Society for Architecture. Last evening, at the Boston Society for Architecture Awards Gala, Harvard University’s District Energy Facility (DEF) won the Harleston Parker People's Choice Award, BSA’s highest honor. It is our distinct pleasure to congratulate the project team on this esteemed achievement, which is a direct reflection of the expertise, ingenuity, dedication, and teamwork invested in this endeavor from the very start. The new 58,000 SF District Energy Facility is a lower-carbon, climate resistant system that provides heating, cooling, and electricity to Harvard's new Allston campus. The design team, led by Leers Weinzapfel Associates Architects, Inc., addressed challenges such as a narrow footprint, proximity to the Charles River, and future expansion needs when designing the facility, delivering nothing short of an exceptional space that literally puts energy on display. RMF’s project team included Bill Mahoney, Jared Markle, PE, John Williamson, Stephen Pollard P.E., and Elizabeth Nolder, whose dedication was integral to the project’s success.
