In Southwest Florida, hurricanes leave behind more than just physical devastation. Beyond the floods, power outages, and property damage, these storms also affect our emotional well-being. While the immediate victims of hurricanes receive the attention and support they need, there are many who silently carry the emotional weight of past tragedies, triggered once again by the arrival of another storm. Lee Health clinical psychologist Rose Illes, PhD, sheds light on a phenomenon called secondary trauma, or vicarious trauma. “With natural disasters like hurricanes, you may be retriggered because you experienced something similar in the past. You’re emotionally vulnerable, even if you weren’t directly impacted this time.” Secondary trauma can mirror the symptoms of direct trauma, making it hard to spot. Dr. Illes highlights some common symptoms: -Emotional exhaustion and irritability -Difficulty sleeping or oversleeping -Sadness, anger, and guilt -Headaches, stomach aches, and other physical symptoms Dr. Illes also highlights the challenge for those helping their own community recover, saying, “Helping your community to recover may lead to stress reactions, sadness, guilt, and exhaustion.” For community helpers, the emotional toll can be greater because they are both survivors and support systems for others. Coping with secondary trauma requires intentional self-care. Dr. Illes suggests a few strategies: -Self-care: Eat right, sleep enough, exercise, and engage in activities that bring you joy. Prioritize your mental and physical health. -Separation rituals: Create routines that help separate your work life from personal life, especially if you work in a traumatic environment. -Seek support: Don’t hesitate to reach out to colleagues, supervisors, or mental health professionals if you feel overwhelmed. -Set boundaries: Limit exposure to traumatic content when possible and learn to say no if you’re feeling emotionally drained. -Practice mindfulness: Stay aware of your emotions and take action when you feel overwhelmed. -Educate yourself: Understanding secondary trauma helps you recognize and address it before it becomes overwhelming. “Whether you’ve lost a lot or you’re upset about your community, you want to give yourself one moment at a time,” Dr. Illes says. “Take a deep breath when you feel overwhelmed, eat healthily, and get the rest you need.” If you or someone you know is struggling with the emotional toll of a hurricane or natural disaster, it’s essential to seek help. -988 – The Suicide Lifeline -Lee Health Addiction Medicine Clinic – 239-343-9190 -SAMHSA Helpline for Disaster Relief: 1-800-985-5990 -PTSD Alliance: https://loom.ly/wRbuei0 or 1-877-507-PTSD -National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255 You’re not alone — our community stands together in recovery, and taking care of your mental health is just as important as rebuilding our physical surroundings. #MentalHealthMatters #LeeHealth #SWFLStrong
