How much agency are we really giving children when we teach them about generosity and giving? innoFaith recently supported a collaboration in Bowie, MD, to explore a new way! At the conclusion of the program, we were so thrilled to celebrate children as civic actors with our partners The Interfaith Coalition of Bowie, MD, Northview Elementary School, and The Giving Square. “I share this as a reminder that youth culture continues to be of utmost importance in building empathy, acceptance, and self-regulation. We say we’re raising our kids to be better—but are we, really? What are they seeing us adults do?”

    Educator. Author. Writer. Speaker

One of my kids drew this. When I asked her what it was, she told me it represented some of the things she often hears from classmates and other students at school. We knew moving them to Denmark would bring challenges, but we never anticipated the outright cruelty that seems so casually present in its schools. This wasn’t a part of my own childhood growing up in Denmark—at least not to this extent. Our kids have been asked when they’re going to “shoot up the school” since they’re American. On Friday, two of them were told to “go back to where they came from” because “no one wants them here in Denmark.” They know they shouldn’t care, they know not to internalize it—but how do you ignore it when you’re constantly faced with these small, cutting cruelties? Of course, comments like these can be found in America too; it’s not unique to Denmark. But to see it play out day after day, not just with one of our kids but all four, is enough to break your heart. And I know they’re not the only ones experiencing this. I know that this is not the only school where comments like this surround those who are there. And the adults are trying so hard to curtail it, but when kids are also allowed to do whatever it is they do unsupervised on social media, when posting "pranks" and fail videos can be your livelihood, when we see adults in power use language just like this to validate their policies, we lose. And our kids are those affected. Whose stories are our children learning from? Whose lives are given importance in elections, movies, YouTube, and social media? Our future, and the core of our humanity, depends on what they are surrounded by. I share this as a reminder that youth culture continues to be of utmost importance in building empathy, acceptance, and self-regulation. We say we’re raising our kids to be better—but are we, really? What are they seeing us adults do?

Art can help us reflect on and discuss difficult or confusing concepts. This picture book (and guide linked below) illustrate how artist Maya Lin formed the idea for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. She thought carefully about the meaning of the work, the form, and how she wanted people to feel. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is so powerful when people visit the art they cry, salute, remember, and hold their hand over their hearts.?
