Community schools have emerged as a promising approach to mitigate chronic absenteeism, as they are adept at harnessing collaboration to identify needs, coordinate supports, and create the conditions for learning and well-being. This LPI report examines how four California community schools—Buena Vista Horace Mann, Elk Hills Elementary, Helen Keller Elementary, and Lucille Roybal-Allard Elementary—significantly reduced their chronic absenteeism rates postpandemic. https://lnkd.in/g4-_99rH

In CA, we're celebrating School Administrators this week and I can't think of a better way than to lean into the HOW of #leader support. Yes, accolades and stories of success and impact are beautiful...and I'm loving reading them. But when it comes right down to it, all of that is just FEEL good and temporary IF it's not coupled with school leaders receiving the support that research shows they want/need. Enter the Learning Policy Institute Developing Deeper Learning Leaders Brief/Book. Here's what we know: "Providing the engaging and comprehensive deeper learning experiences all students need requires school leaders to implement new school structures and classroom practices. This brief explores five leadership preparation and in-service programs that help school leaders acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to enable, encourage, and sustain deeper learning. It also offers policy recommendations to support implementation." Deeper learning for young people STARTS with deeper learning for the adults and the good news is... that learning exists. You can explore 5 examples outlined in the brief and, yes....our National Center on Education and the Economy's #NISL offering is one of them. Don't you just love it when the research backs up the assertions? Oh. Heck. Yeah! Grab your copy here and use the link above to grab some time to chat about how deep learning for your leaders can lead to deeper learning for your young people! https://bit.ly/3Y8rLJN

Strong school leadership is crucial to the success of both students and teachers. Yet, access to professional learning for school leaders varies across states. This LPI report shines a spotlight on how states are enhancing professional learning for school leadership teams—not just individual principals. One key takeaway? Effective leadership isn't about a single person; it's about empowering entire leadership teams to create shared responsibility and foster a culture of collaboration across the school and district. Shared leadership can drive systemic change. https://bit.ly/4gQaj5l Learning Policy Institute

Teacher shortages are widespread, yet layoffs occur annually. This paradox stems from converging factors such as state and local funding decisions, fluctuations in public school enrollment, and the impending expiration of federal ESSER funds.
