How much does talking with young children really impact their language development? A study from the University of Chicago tested Chat2Learn, a simple program that encouraged parents to engage in structured conversations with their preschoolers through text message prompts. Findings showed that both conversational approaches helped children learn new words, but the Definition Approach led to even greater gains—helping children pick up additional words beyond those in the prompts. Parents also shifted their mindset, becoming less likely to believe intelligence is fixed. These results highlight how small, scalable interventions can make a big difference in language learning.
