Learn Fresh and GameChanger are thrilled to announce a new partnership to bring 50 Math Hoops Live Kits, a physical activity edition of the NBA Math Hoops program, to educational sites nationwide this fall! Supported by a generous grant from GameChanger, Learn Fresh will expand the program to reach more students across the country so they can enhance their math and social-emotional learning (SEL) through interactive physical play. Offered at no cost, Math Hoops Live Kits will be available to schools and out-of-school programs through an application process, with Learn Fresh staff providing training to educators and equipping sites with materials. Educators, are you interested in applying? Fill out the form here: https://lnkd.in/ex_JcYGF. (Due to limited availability, not all applicants will receive a kit. The Amazin' Mets Foundation and Learn Fresh brought sixth and seventh graders across Queens, New York together in an immersive learning experience focused on engineering a new, greener experience for New York Mets fans. The Science Series provides teachers with seven lesson plans, developed by Learn Fresh alongside Mets Ballpark Operations staff. Inspired by water safety and conservation and recycling, students from the IS 73 FRANK SANSIVIERI INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL (THE) addressed the topic: “Like in most ballparks, bottled water is sold to fans who need refreshment during the game. Are there better options to use other available resources?” Check out our latest blog post to see what they came up with!

“Central to [Learn Fresh’s] role in the field is framing #matheducation as a narrative, as a story. When you think about the history of how humans have learned over time, storytelling has always been central to the way we connect,” explains Nick Monzi, co-founder and CEO of Learn Fresh. “Math education historically has been devoid of this idea, so with programs like NBA Math Hoops, the curriculum is built like a narrative where you start at the beginning of a season, draft a team, work through a series of games, uncover different math concepts, and you end with a championship tournament that comes around year over year as a cycle that educators and students can participate in.” Watch the full conversation between Nick and Inspired Minds portfolio manager Emma Banay to learn about Learn Fresh’s innovative approach to igniting students’ STEM interest, building math skills, and fostering confidence both in and out of the classroom.

Senior leader with expertise in partnership-building, program design and scale, and program implementation.
Thrilled to share some thoughts in The 74 about the importance of out-of-school time programs in this post-ESSER moment. There's so many reasons why these programs matter, but -- for me -- social connection, fun, and student-centeredness top the list right now. These qualities speak to what both parents and students tell us they see as the most valuable aspects of in-person learning right now, with important benefits for engagement in school, chronic absence, and social connection. Happy to feature stellar Overdeck grantees creating these special experiences: FIRST, DiscoverE, National 4-H Council, National Inventors Hall of Fame, and Learn Fresh!
Afterschool, vacation, and summer programs were key beneficiaries of federal stimulus dollars. But the expiration of ESSER funds means these types of programs may be first on the chopping block for district spending. In a new op-ed, Emma Banay, manager of the Inspired Minds portfolio, points to the important role high-quality out-of-school-time programs play in children's holistic development. “What’s really special about them isn’t just the opportunity to improve academic skills. It’s that they are — simply put — fun.” Programs from grantees including FIRST, DiscoverE, Learn Fresh, National Inventors Hall of Fame, and National 4-H Council provide academic benefits while also supporting children’s social-emotional development, such as improved interpersonal skills and stronger peer-to-peer and peer-to-adult relationships. That makes them particularly important now. Read more in The 74 Media.
