Increasingly I am convinced that designing for student motivation, engagement, and agency should be at the core of transforming education ecosystems. I first got my start on really thinking about how to design education systems (well) over two decades ago when I was lucky enough to work in countries that were emerging from civil war and armed conflict. Amazingly, I met some of the most optimistic people I have ever worked with, hope was like oxygen. Necessary to survive. Within hope is possibility and within possibility is the ability to imagine something new. Being able to work with others to try and truly reimagine education systems, sometimes from scratch, was an incredible gift. That experience deeply shaped my perspective on how to think about education system transform and (re)design. You have to consider what of traditional education practices and values you want to keep and sustain and those you want to sunset in this rebuilding process. It reminds me very much of the moment we are in with AI. How on earth will it impact education? Or rather, what from the traditional system do we want to ensure remains and what practices, mindsets, values can AI help us reinvent? It has been an exciting week. First looking at the burning education issues of the day in the U.S. with the Reimagining Education gathering hosted by LearnerStudio and now globally at the Summit of the Future at #UNGA79. More than ever before, I see the conversations internally in the US mirroring (and possibly converging) the global conversations.
