It was an honor to gather with ~30 top investment professionals and leading government officials for the Latino Venture Capital Summit at The White House. Our roundtable discussion focused on establishing a private-public partnership to close the investment gap in the Latino VC and business community. I applaud the support and intentionality shown by leaders from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, U.S. Economic Development Administration, U.S. Small Business Administration, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board in addressing this issue. It’s staggering to consider that a community representing 19% of the U.S. population, $3 trillion in economic output, and 50% of new business formations receives less than 2% of VC investment. Latinos also account for 25% of Gen Z and Gen Alpha, who will shape consumer and enterprise trends for decades to come. When investors see a disconnect like this, we recognize an arbitrage opportunity and strategically deploy capital to maximize returns. In capital-efficient markets, such arbitrage opportunities typically don’t last long. That’s why it’s puzzling, as Vincent Cordero puts it, that “Latino participation in the U.S. capital investment marketplace remains infinitesimal.” But this isn’t just an “investment opportunity” or a “DEI issue.” It’s a national priority. Our country is leaving hundreds of billions of dollars in economic output and millions of jobs on the table by not addressing this gap. The challenge is significant, and the path forward won’t be linear. But as VC investors, we’re accustomed to playing the long game. I have strong conviction in this group of investors. With the right support from the government, we can close this gap and deliver outsized returns for our country. On a personal note, I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge how momentous this occasion was for me. I never imagined that a kid from South Central Los Angeles would break into VC and be invited to The White House! This is proof that nothing is impossible in America. I simply can’t wait to see what this group will accomplish together.
