May is a great month to learn about mental health, as all of the organizations in the area who work in the mental health field celebrate Mental Health Awareness Month! We at LEAP work alongside many mental health professionals through our Head Start, Community Services, and Workforce Development Programs. But the major way we contribute to mental health in our community is by addressing the social determinants of health. The CDC defines Social Determinants Of Health (SDOH) as "the nonmedical factors that influence health outcomes. They are the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age, and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life. These forces and systems include economic policies and systems, development agendas, social norms, social policies, racism, climate change, and political systems." Our Head Start Program assists families in finding primary care providers for each member of their family, they also are providing quality child care during working hours. Our Community Services Team run an Emergency Food Pantry that individuals can come to once a month, they work alongside individuals in difficult situations assisting in rent, utilities, and other emergency situations, they also have an elderly transportation team which help keep our seniors get to vital appointments Our Workforce Development Team assists Washington County Residents get their GEDs, they work alongside displaced workers, and host workshops to elevate job seeker's resumes and skills. There are many components to Community Action and Head Start that stem from helping people live a healthy and fulfilling life, by removing barriers that keep people in poverty. #mentalhealthawarenessmonth #SDOH #PovertyPrevention #LEAP

We had a wonderful turnout at LEAP's 2024 Youth Career Fair. Over 800 students from 5 Washington County Schools attended the event. This event was a huge success due to the amazing employers who took time out of their busy schedules to be there.
