Lean Summit 2025, you were the bee’s knees. We had the opportunity to hear our CEO, Stephen Markovich, MD speak to a cross-industry audience about the impact and importance of OhioHealth’s management system. Emily Swaney and I led a packed session sharing how we support our goal of creating 35,000 problem solvers with a small but mighty lean team. I am honored to have been the recipient of the 2025 Nate Hurle Scholarship, which enabled us to bring more talent from our team to learn at the summit. Wins all around! Many connections were made, and thought-provoking conversations had. Special thanks to the Catalysis Inc. and Lean Enterprise Institute staff for making this event so value-added! What does participatory design have to do with lean product and process development (LPPD)? Read all about it in our story on Imara Tech, a decade-long MIT D-Lab project to develop and improve a mechanized thresher with subsistence farmers in Tanzania. The transformative multi-grain thresher (MCT) turned what used to take two to three weeks of manual labor into hours of mechanical work. Why does this matter? Approximately 80 percent of Tanzania’s 67 million people are small-scale subsistence farmers, cultivating plots of less than three hectares, mainly for their consumption rather than commercial markets. The MCT minimizes crop losses and damage during harvesting, improving incomes and economic stability. ?? https://bit.ly/4ibMiWA #ParticipatoryDesign #ProductDevelopment #Lean #LeanThinking #Engineering #LPPD

??????’?? ?????????? #???????? ???????????????? ???? ?????? ???????? ????????????????. Spend time in reflection – studying, checking, and analyzing the difference between what we expected to happen and what’s actually happened. ???????? ???? ???? ???????? ???? ???????????? ???? ???????? ?????????????? ?????????????? ??????????????? Lean principles aren’t just about process improvement or manufacturing—but too many people still see it that way. In the latest episode of Chain of Learning, James Womack, the founder of the Lean Enterprise Institute, breaks down his thinking where lean has fallen short from his vision 40 years ago: ? Managers see #kaizen as one-off events, not a continuous improvement mindset ? Leadership turnover and outsourcing lean to consultants (internal or external) have led to projects, not transformation ? Leaders driven by a short-term focus and a focus on cost-cutting and efficiency has neglected long-term learning and people development ? Implementation process improvement projects rather developing a comprehensive management system ? Lack of a clear strategy connecting purpose from top leadership to the front lines. ???? ???????? ???????????????????? ????????’?? ???????????????????? ?????? ?????????????? ??????'???? ????????????????????, ????’?? ???????? ???? ?????????????? ?????? ????????????. ?? What’s been the biggest barrier to lean transformation in your organization? ?? What’s working? ?? And what can you learn and adjust for even greater success? ?? Tune into Chain of Learning for Part 1 of my conversation with Womack James to explore what changes are needed from us as a lean community for it to reach its true potential for broader lean enterprises globally. ??? Reunited in person with John Shook for the first time since “Learning to Lead, Leading to Learn” was published 5 years ago. This first week of March 2020 - LEí (like most conferences and gatherings) cancelled their annual conference slated to run just a few weeks later (Masia G. and I tonight reminisced about our conversation 5 years ago). At that event I was going to announce the upcoming release of my book — written about John’s first boss at Toyota, Isao Yoshino, and his 4 decades at Toyota shaping the Toyota Way, #hoshinkanri, and A3 thinking. So much has happened since then. We pivoted. We adjusted. We carried on. And thankfully we are back in person together. I’m grateful to have graced the stages at many lean and continuous improvement events around the world and excited to be reunited with my colleagues here in the U.S. (and those who have traveled from around the world). I’m looking forward to a great two days of #lean thinking and practice at the #LeanSummit2025 here in Atlanta hosted by Lean Enterprise Institute and Catalysis Inc. The future of lean is with us. Let’s reflect on the principles and keep building our Chain of Learning into the future. And for those of you at the Summit - come say hi! I’ll be signing books by the bookstore on Wednesday 5pm.
