If you Google “how to control your anger,” you’ll be met with a clean 1.2 million results. And 99.99% of what you read will reduce, reuse & recycle the same 5 boilerplate strategies:
“Take a deep breath, count to ten, exercise, limit your caffeine intake, meditate,” and so on.
But, imagine if instead of “controlling your anger,” you could use it to your advantage. What if you could channel your anger to improve your performance?
The research indicates that you can. And that you should.
Specifically, the research highlights three major ways anger can improve your performance:
?? 1/ Increase Persistence - angry participants outperformed others on an anagram test. The main reason was that angry participants spent more time trying to solve the task.
?? 2/ Enhance Focus - angry participants outperformed others in a skiing videogame. This was because their ability to focus was enhanced.
?? 3/ Trigger Action - a study looking at voting trends showed that angry people are much more likely to take action (i.e., vote, protest, speak up).
