Emotional intelligence is a sought-after competency. A lot of leaders see themselves as a good judge of emotional intelligence. But self awareness is where emotional intelligence starts, and many leaders think they already have plenty of self-awareness. Not so fast. A leader may not be as self-aware as they think. Smart leaders look for the context. When people share something, leaders look at the bigger picture. Decision time? Look at the frame around the decision. What came just before this? How is this likely to be received? When we miss the frame, we take things out of context, people don't feel understood and we end up making worse decisions. Need some help with framing things or context? Reach out to Ron Oltmanns at Leadskill #leadership #decisions

Are you in automatic mode? As constant problem-solvers, leaders often assume that everything an employee brings them is a problem-to-be-solved. Check that assumption first. Is this a problem and do they WANT a solution? Or is this a problem and they want to keep me informed? Or are they just wanting to be heard? A leader who jumps into problem-solving mode every time is seen as someone who doesn't listen or as a micro-manager. Check your assumptions before problem-solving

One sign that we’ve lost our way is when we lack intrinsic motivation. Whether at work, school, in sports or relationships, when motivation goes it’s a signal to look for what’s missing. What if our purpose is clear, but we still lack motivation? There are?three things?that support our intrinsic motivation, so check and see if something might be missing in these three areas. Together, they spell the acronym “ARM”, so I call these the strong arm of motivation. Read full blog article: https://lnkd.in/gB_GJe8w Ron Oltmanns #leadershipmatters #leadskill

“What matters to you? Can we talk about it?” The answer to both questions depends first on whether I think you are a “friendly” or if there is a level of danger for me to open up to you. If we have a basic level of trust, we can have a good conversation about matters. One of the challenges leaders face is tapping into the magical force of what motivates or drives people they manage. How do you discover that? Read full blog article: https://lnkd.in/g9Q5w_NQ Ron Oltmanns

If you’re famous enough, someone is going to write an article or a book about you. Even if you’re not famous, someone might write a short story about you called an obituary. Your story is already written. It’s not necessarily finished, but it’s in progress. Leaders own their story.
