Please join me in wishing Kristina CONGRATULATIONS! WHEN DID YOU JOIN THE AEROSPACE AND DEFENSE INDUSTRY? 2017 WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE AEROSPACE / DEFENSE MOMENT? One of the most fascinating experiences for me was joining the Sea Trials of our Fast Patrol Vessel and sitting next to the captain. The feeling of the powerful engines and the thrill of hitting the target Max. Speed was unforgettable. I love diving deep into the product, understanding the technology and solutions behind it, and experiencing it firsthand. This allows me to confidently advocate for my company every day. WHO IS YOUR LEADING LADY ROLE MODEL? I have three leading ladies, and I can’t trade one for the other. Rayyanah Barnawi, the first Saudi Arabian woman to venture into space, is inspiring other KSA girls to believe that anything is possible. Marillyn Hewson, for her notable leadership at Lockheed Martin. Becky Lewis, my colleague, completely transformed her career and overcame life challenges in her 60s, and she is now leading some of the most critical Cybersecurity programs. WHAT WAS YOUR BEST LEADING LADY MOMENT? I’m waiting for something I worked 7 years for to happen, to be my best leading lady moment. However, the most memorable so far was attending the Steel-Cutting Ceremony at Pakistan’s Navy shipyard, being one of only 10-15 women among 200+ men, the only blonde woman, and standing next to the Admiral. I didn’t sense any unacceptance, and I believe these are small but meaningful steps for leading women in defense. Please join me in wishing Sunitha CONGRATULATIONS! WHEN DID YOU JOIN THE AEROSPACE AND DEFENSE INDUSTRY? 2004 WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE AEROSPACE / DEFENSE MOMENT? One of my favorite experiences was when we asked our employees to simulate a service failure while our test equipment was down. Everyone was incredibly supportive, and we managed to replicate the issue and develop a solution in under two weeks. This approach was far more efficient than the traditional method, which would have taken over a month just to simulate the issue. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of collaboration and the importance of finding solutions rather than just complaining about challenges. WHO IS YOUR LEADING LADY ROLE MODEL? I have many leading lady role models, but one who stands out is Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of India in the 1900s. While her background may have given her some advantages, it’s impressive how she navigated a male-dominated country with such strength and courage. She inspires me, especially when I think about the aerospace and manufacturing sectors, where we still have a long way to go in achieving balance. WHAT WAS YOUR BEST LEADING LADY MOMENT? One of my best leading lady moments was when I led an organizational change project that was crucial for addressing performance issues. I organized brainstorming sessions, encouraged everyone to contribute their ideas, and developed a collaborative game plan. Witnessing the team come together and regain their motivation was incredibly rewarding. Not only did we meet our project targets, but we also strengthened our relationships and improved our communication. During the night shift, on the flightline, we were asked to do work on top of the fuselage and the tail of the aircraft. That's when I found out most of my military co-workers were afraid of heights, and I had a superpower. I'd jump at the opportunity to drive and work using the boom-lift. WHO IS YOUR LEADING LADY ROLE MODEL? There's so many of you, that all of you gals are my role models. I see something special that I love about each and every one of you. Please join me in wishing Jackie CONGRATULATIONS! WHEN DID YOU JOIN THE AEROSPACE AND DEFENSE INDUSTRY? 2020 WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE AEROSPACE / DEFENSE MOMENT? One of my favorite moments in the aerospace and defense industry happened early in my career. I worked onsite at a facility where 4-wheeled military vehicles are made. Watching these masterpieces come together from individual parts into fully assembled vehicles was incredible. Knowing they are designed to protect our soldiers as they defend us was a powerful experience. It was a proud moment to witness firsthand the precision, dedication, and craftsmanship involved in building something that contributes directly to the safety of those who serve our country. WHO IS YOUR LEADING LADY ROLE MODEL? My mentor is the epitome of professionalism and my leading lady role model. She transcends the gender title by embodying her role with authenticity, generosity, and unwavering support for everyone around her. A true leading lady is someone who is genuine, shares her wisdom openly, and uplifts others without hesitation. She leads with grace and integrity, always encouraging growth and collaboration. Her ability to guide, mentor, and inspire makes her a remarkable figure, not just as a woman, but as a leader who sets a powerful example for everyone. WHAT WAS YOUR BEST LEADING LADY MOMENT? My best leading lady moment came as I transitioned into my new role as a Business Analyst. Attending workshops and conferences and learning from inspiring leaders taught me that a career is far from a linear journey—it's about embracing the chaos and adapting along the way. I realized that my network is truly my net worth, and the relationships we build help define our success. Ultimately, how we respond to challenges shapes who we are. These lessons empowered me to take ownership of my path and to approach every twist and turn as an opportunity for growth. WONDER WOMAN WEDNESDAY! I am excited to introduce to you Lauren Sutherland with American Airlines as this week’s featured Leading Ladies Of... Aerospace, Defense & Space Wonder Woman. Please join me in wishing Lauren CONGRATULATIONS! WHEN DID YOU JOIN THE AEROSPACE AND DEFENSE INDUSTRY? 2002 WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE AEROSPACE / DEFENSE MOMENT? My favorite aerospace moment would have to be my first patient flight as an EMS helicopter pilot. This was the first time I was able to use my skills to help someone in need. I have a lot of memorable flights while I was flying at the hospital. A lot of the time I felt like was just the pilot but after a while I found myself able to help comfort families. I realized how much I loved helping people and it inspired me to join our peer support team. Through this position was able to help fellow pilots overcome traumatic experiences and it helped mold me into the person I am today. A close second was the first time I landed a jet with a couple hundred people on board. I have had so many great memories in this industry and many more to come. WHO IS YOUR LEADING LADY ROLE MODEL? Hands down my leading lady role model is Kandy Hayes Fleming. She is a EMS helicopter captain for Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. She never passes up a moment to mentor young female pilots and has been instrumental in my career. She is beautiful, confident, kind, and a talented pilot. It’s very important for women to have representation in this industry and community of peer support. WHAT WAS YOUR BEST LEADING LADY MOMENT? My biggest accomplishment was receiving the National EMS Pilots Association (NEMSPA) 2019 EMS Pilot of the Year. My most proud moment in my career was flying a helicopter to my children’s school and landing on the ball field for career day. Seeing my children being proud of who I am means the absolute most to me. Also, for the young girls to see a female in a position traditionally held by men, would help them see that it’s possible for them.
