?? OUT NOW: The Freedom to Flourish – A Radical Transformation Of Work! We're excited to share a transformative session designed for HR and business leaders on how to build organizations that prioritize people’s well-being and create lasting positive impact. Based on three years of in-depth research, this discussion features a CEO, an HR Director, and Transformation Consultants as they explore the limitations of traditional performance management and propose a new, holistic path forward. Key highlights: * Balancing Profit and Legacy: Addressing the challenge of achieving financial targets while leaving a positive legacy amidst social and environmental crises. * Reinspiring Organisations: Exploring how business ideologies shape organisational practices, expanding on the popular TEAL paradigm. * Reimagining People Management: Understanding how traditional practices like target setting, performance appraisals, and variable pay often undermine creativity and well-being. * The Role of HR: Embracing HR’s potential to transform organizations into forces for good by promoting ethical leadership and deliberate organisational development. The session introduces the Flourishing Manifesto, advocating for a more humane, purpose-driven approach to people management as a lever to sustainable organizational transformation. HR leaders have a unique opportunity to lead this change, if they take courage to challenge outdated business ideologies and embrace the vision of business as a force for good. ?? Degrowth: Savior or Devil? ?? As the debate intensifies, we hear endless opinions framing degrowth as either our environmental salvation or a dystopian descent. But beyond the extremes, how many have really paused to understand the shadow sides of growth itself? Let's peel back the layers and learn from Matthias Schmelzer our next guest at Business for Humanity what eight historical critiques reveal about why relentless expansion isn’t as straightforward as it seems. ?? The ecological critique argues that infinite growth on a finite planet is a collision course with reality, sidelining resource limits and environmental stability. ?? Socio-economic critiques add that while GDP might rise, it’s an empty metric for well-being—often just as much a measure of harm as of good, and blind to worsening inequality. ???? Then there’s the feminist critique, which calls out the hidden labor that underpins all "progress"—from caregiving to unpaid domestic work, largely left out of our economic scorecards. ?? South-North critiques expose how developed economies thrive on extraction and exploitation, cementing global disparities rather than alleviating them. ?? The cultural critique asks how growth changes us, feeding a way of life where human relationships and work feel alienated, ?? while the critique of capitalism highlights growth’s dependency on unyielding accumulation, leaving crises in its wake. ?? The industrialism critique questions the very systems powering growth, arguing both capitalist and socialist models create hierarchies, waste, and ecological harm. ???? Lastly, the reactionary critique fears growth’s impact on local traditions and cultural cohesion, framing it as an agent of disruption and loss. Whether you see growth as the cure or the cause of modern problems, understanding these critiques shows us why simply measuring success by GDP or expansion is no longer tenable. Degrowth may be polarizing, but it raises questions we can’t afford to ignore. Let’s not sleepwalk through a one-way path to “progress” without first examining what we might be losing along the way. ?? Date: Monday 11th November 2024 ?? Time: 16-18 CEST (3-5PM UK, 10-12AM ET, 7-9AM PT) ?? Location: Zoom registration https://lnkd.in/e7uvD4yE

THE REVENGE OF THE ENGINEERS, OR: HOW PEOPLE BECAME OUR LEAST IMPORTANT ASSETS In the relentless pursuit of efficiency and profit, the modern corporate landscape has become a battleground where the human element is increasingly marginalized. Peter Cappelli's incisive analysis during the #FlourishingFestival2024 exposes a troubling reality: finance moguls, tech barons, and engineers have effectively engineered humanity out of business. Their unholy alliance has reshaped the corporate world, transforming it into a cold, calculating machine where employees are mere cogs, easily replaceable and perpetually expendable. The finance-driven obsession with shareholder value has reduced human capital to a liability on balance sheets, while tech-driven management styles have twisted once-empowering concepts like "agile" into tools of relentless pressure and burnout. In this brave new world, the average 50-year-old American now navigates through a dizzying 12 different jobs, not by choice, but as a victim of endless restructuring and downsizing. CEOs, dancing to Wall Street's tune, announce layoffs on a whim, sowing fear and instability. Meanwhile, the engineering mindset has infiltrated even the most human-centric aspects of business, with performance management stripped of its developmental essence and reduced to a numbers game. The consequences of this dehumanization are dire. Employees, once valued assets, are now treated as liabilities to be minimized. The result is a workforce plagued by stress, burnout, and disengagement – a recipe for long-term business failure masked by short-term gains. But all hope is not lost and the battle for the soul of business is far from over. As Peter poignantly states in what is probably one of the most provocative and enlightening talks about HR this year, "If you're going to make business about efficiency, at least make sure it's efficient—constant restructuring isn't." Peter's rallying cry is for #HR to emerge as the last line of defense against this tide of dehumanization. It's time for HR to lead the charge in bringing humanity back to the forefront of business, standing firm against the tyranny of spreadsheets and algorithms. HR must unite and prove, unequivocally, that investing in people is not simply the ultimate competitive advantage—but the right thing to do, in order to shape the future of work for generations to come. The revenge of the engineers, finance gurus, and tech barons may have begun, but HR has the power – and the responsibility – to write the final chapter.
