Leadership Seminole is ten month program beginning each August with a two-day orientation followed by monthly one-day sessions focusing on timely issues within the following areas: government, arts, culture, infrastructure, public safety, human services, healthcare, education, economic development, environmental preservation, simulated society (SIMSOC), and concluding in May with law and justice and a sold out graduation ceremony with 400 people in attendance. Participation is highly interactive and experiential, with opportunities for networking and team building throughout. The sessions are an opportunity for participants to develop lifelong relationships with their classmates, community leaders serving as facilitators and subject experts. Class members build vast background knowledge on important issues that impact them on a daily basis for the betterment of themselves, their company and their community. Participants must submit a completed two-page application in order to be considered for enrollment. The application is presented to the Leadership Seminole Executive Council for review. Classes are limited to 55 participants.

Class 34 got an in-depth look at the Human Services available in Seminole County last Friday. We started our day with an explanation of the Independent Sector from Mark Brewer and the Central Florida Foundation followed by a panel on homelessness and affordable housing. Four organizations working to prevent homelessness and help those experiencing homelessness were represented; Seminole County Government, Christian HELP, HOPE Helps, and Rescue Outreach Mission - the class had great questions about this complex problem. We toured Kids House where their team is dedicated to preventing child abuse and helping child abuse victims. We toured The Sharing Center where the class was able to see the drop-in services for the homeless, mental health support for those in crisis, the food pantry, the donation center and the thrift store which helps to fund their mission. Our group had lunch at Inspire before touring this unique spot in Seminole County which serves adults with special needs and also uses social enterprise. We visited a neighborhood in Casselberry that boasts three homes built by Habitat for Humanity and spoke with a home-owner before heading out to The Village, an IMPOWER program. Here the class was able to see a group home for young adults who have aged out of foster care as well as listen to a presentation from Boys Town Central Florida; an organization that provides on site foster housing and in-home services for children. Finally, we heard from Meals on Wheels, etc who are caring for the elderly in our area with home-delivered meals and more. Thanks to the Senior Resource Alliance, the class wrote Easter cards to our neighbors in need. This day is eye-opening and also heart-warming for our group. We are grateful to JP Morgan Chase, The Sharing Center, Lake Mary Kitchen and Bath, and Northland Church for making this day possible as well as our premier partners AdventHealth and Wharton Smith Construction group.
