Last week, LB Class 43 had an incredible day celebrating Culture, Arts & History! Thank you to our amazing Co-Chairs, Jacob Aronin, Jill Kratish, and Liz Somerstein, for orchestrating such a fantastic day. The class’s journey began at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, with a “backstage” tour of the facility. The Cohort's leadership skills were playfully honed through an 'Improv for Leadership' exercise led by Edward Zeltner, followed by Erin Dahlgren Lister's transformative Breath Work and Public Speaking Workshop. Our cultural exploration continued with enlightening tours of History Fort Lauderdale - 3 Museums & Research Library on the banks of the New River. the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale, and the Historic Stranahan House Museum, each offering a unique perspective on our vibrant local heritage. The day culminated with a special panel at the Museum of Discovery and Science featuring a powerful discussion on Leadership in the Arts. The panelists included: Joe Cox, President and CEO of the Museum of Discovery and Science Ty Sutton, CVE, President and CEO of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts Phillip Dunlap, Director of the Broward County Cultural Division The panel was moderated by Mary Riedel, Board President of FUNDING ARTS BROWARD INC, and provided inspiring insights on how leadership in the arts makes a lasting impact on our community. Last week, YLB Class XXXVIII experienced a truly impactful and inspiring Health & Human Services Day! The day was filled with powerful learning opportunities and meaningful interactions with organizations making a real difference in our community. The day began with a tour of the Broward College Health Sciences Simulation Center, where the class explored the cutting-edge technology used to train the next generation of healthcare professionals. It was a fascinating look at how innovation is shaping the future of healthcare education. Next, the class visited the FLITE Center, where they were introduced to the critical work being done to support young people aging out of foster care. A heartfelt thank you to Kristina, Felichia, Tricia, Andrew, Shamika, and the entire team for their impactful presentation. The class also had the opportunity to create welcoming Happy Birthday cards for the young people at the center, spreading joy and hope to those starting their journey there. The class then had the privilege of meeting the wonderful therapy dogs of Canine Assisted Therapy, Inc., learning about their life-changing work and experiencing firsthand the comfort these furry friends provide to those in need. A highlight of the day was an important presentation by Dr. Linda Parker, PhD, CEO of Women In Distress of Broward County, Inc., and Lead Education & Prevention Specialist Joan Dominguez. The class gained invaluable insights into identifying healthy, unhealthy, and abusive relationships, as well as learning how to spot red flags and support those who may be in need. The day concluded with a visit to the The Broward Partnership for the Homeless, Inc., where the class gained a deeper understanding of homelessness in our community through an eye-opening presentation and a tour of the facility. The group also had the chance to contribute to the community by donating much-needed toiletry items, which were greatly appreciated by the organization. A special thank you to our Health & Human Services Day chairs—Hiyam Ahmad, Dustin Forman, MS, Linda Parker, Nora Powell, and Lorraine Shim—for organizing such an enriching and impactful day. Inspirational Insights at 'Serving Up Leadership' with Ron Magill, Zoo Miami’s “Goodwill Ambassador”! Ron has dedicated 45 years to Zoo Miami, sharing his passion for animals, conservation, and education. He is known for his love of wildlife and his incredible storytelling, which was in full force at the lunch. The session was moderated by Tom Loffredo, a distinguished Leadership Broward Class 28 alumnus and the managing shareholder of GrayRobinson’s Fort Lauderdale office. His guidance led to a discussion full of heartfelt stories and inspirational leadership insights, providing attendees with valuable strategies for leadership and life. Some of the key takeaways included: "Nothing is impossible if you believe," his father's cherished advice—"Patience and Faith" ("Paciencia y fe"), "Wait for good things to happen," "Don't give up," "Failure is not the opposite of success; it is the path to success," and "When the people lead, the leaders will follow." Yesterday, Leadership Broward Class XLIII kicked off their First Program Day focused on Government and Education! It was an incredible day, thanks to our amazing Day Chairs: Robert Ahlness, Porshia Garcia, MPA, Andrea Knowles Hill, MPA, Daphnee A. Sainvil, J.D., LL.M, Christine S., Carlos Vega, and Michael Worley. The day began at City of Cooper City, City Hall with a warm welcome from Cooper City Mayor Greg Ross, followed by an inspiring talk on "Connecting" from Dr. Gregory A. Salters, Ed. D. The class was then captivated by a dynamic panel discussion moderated by State Representative Christine Hunschofsky, featuring Mayor Angelo Castillo (City of Pembroke Pines), Mayor Josh Levy (City of Hollywood), Mayor Greg Ross (City of Cooper City), Mayor Nick Sortal (City of Plantation), and Mayor Sandy Welch (City of Coconut Creek). The day continued with a heartening presentation on School Safety from Broward County School Board member Lori Alhadeff, leaving a lasting impact on the class. Next, the class participated in a Mock Commission meeting led by the City of Fort Lauderdale team, covering an agenda item and gaining firsthand experience in local government processes. They were then visited by Florida Senator Jason Pizzo, who roused the class with leadership and insignt. In the afternoon, the class visited the Alan B. Levan | NSU Broward Center of Innovation, where they heard from Dr. Jaap Donath, Ph.D., Assistant Executive Director of Programs, and toured the impressive innovation center that offers resources for entrepreneurs—an experience that left everyone in awe. The day wrapped up with a Public Safety Tour and Demonstration at the Cooper City Police Station, thanks to Captain Christopher De Giovanni, Ashley Barcena, and the Cooper City BSO Law Enforcement Team.
