Leadership+Design began with a simple goal: To create transformative professional development experiences. Since 2009, L+D has designed meaningful learning experiences for leaders, teachers, and learners at all levels - experiences that model teaching and learning for the 21st century. We help participants learn and practice the habits, mindsets, skill sets, and behaviors of intentional leaders, entrepreneurs, designers, innovators, and creatives. Through this work, we build the capacity of schools and organizations to transform themselves in collaborative ways in order to be nimble and adaptable in a time of rapid change. We are a national non-profit with a strong history of working across many sectors (k-12 e and higher education, business, local government and state agencies) to improve operations, strategy, leadership and culture. We employ human-centered design (design thinking) to guide clients towards change efforts aimed at more impactful and sustainable customer and client services. While the organization's history is rooted in "designing experiences for the people who create the future of teaching and learning", we are a deeply human organization that recognizes that teams and leaders across the spectrum can be supported by many of the same tools and processes we have used with success in education. In the rapidly changing social, cultural, and economic world we are experiencing, Leadership + Design is built to strategically support organizations being more nimble, iterative, intentional and successful. We help schools, districts, organizations and businesses with: -Remote Collaboration Training and Strategies -Strategic Planning -Coaching -Tackling messy, ambiguous, difficult issues, problems or initiatives by using a process inspired by human-centered design. -Critical Conversation and Communication -Re-design of the use of time and school schedule -School and Organization culture redesign -Team Dynamics and Retreat Opportunities

  • We absolutely loved joining The Waverly School community and seeing their collective creativity, thoughtfulness, and care develop such an inspired vision for the future.

    A great day of strategic planning at The Waverly School. We were joined by 60 community members: faculty, staff, admin, parents, students, alumni parents, alumni and our two facilitators from Leadership + Design. Shout out Greg Bamford and Joe Romano! A serendipitous and completely unrelated drop-in from Charlotte Worsley, who helped me fix a broken gate at my school, rounded out a day of visioning at the highest levels and working on the ground. Being a head of school and having your community show up to share ideas, laugh and talked about what makes the school special is really inspiring. Everyone has to pitch in for it to work. Each one, teach one.

    You are thinking about next year and prepping new leaders or leaders that will be taking on new roles, and you are considering what PD will be helpful. When we created Leadership Lab, we had a few key ideas: ? New leaders have as much unlearning as they do learning to prepare them for taking on a new role. We can unlearn ideas like: Leaders always know the answer to problems or need to act like it. The alternative is a leader rooted in curiosity armed with both a mindset and skillset to dig in and collaboratively solve with, not for others. ? New leaders need community - it can be lonely to move from having friends as colleagues to having people that are projecting their fears, needs and hopes onto you and sharing judgements with secret hope you will do their work for them. If you are new to leadership, you need people to call - people that will take your call and that won't need anything from you. ? Leadership skills are not learned via slide deck. You need a lab, you need practice. Not only is a lab more fun, but it helps you explore concepts on multiple levels.     Strategic planning is a story about the future—of a community, the world it will meet, and how to cultivate learners to make a meaningful impact. This past week at the Francis W. Parker School, L+D Partner Joe Romano led six Think Tanks for over 150 community members, sparking curiosity about the world of 2035—challenging assumptions and asking big questions about how the mission of cultivating empathy, courage, and clarity will take shape in an ever-evolving world. The next day, Parker’s Strategic Planning Design Team took those insights—alongside empathy interviews—and distilled them into opportunities, challenges, and unmet needs. Excited to see where Parker goes next in bringing this critical mission to life. #StrategicPlanning #FutureofEducation

    Strategy That Informs, Influences, and Inspires A strategic plan should inform, influence, and inspire a community. And the best way to achieve that is by ensuring the community informs, influences, and inspires the plan. That’s why Cary Academy is engaging in a collaborative strategic planning process, facilitated by L+D Partner Antonio Viva. In a recent Community Design Day, students, parents, and employees came together to share perspectives, generate ideas, and shape the school’s future direction—ensuring that strategy is built alongside the people who will inspire it to happen every day. #StrategicPlanning #SchoolLeadership
