?TerraFlow Energy Advances Flow Battery Innovation with New Test Facility LDES Council member TerraFlow Energy has officially launched a 50 kW sandbox environment, a dedicated test site designed to refine and optimize flow battery technology. This milestone is a key step in scaling long duration energy storage (LDES) solutions that promote clean, reliable grids. TerraFlow’s flow battery technology operates by storing energy in separate tanks of electrolytes that pass through a central stack, allowing for efficient energy storage and delivery without the risks of fire or thermal runaway. The test site is advancing LDES innovation through: ??Advanced system testing: Evaluating stack performance, fluid dynamics, and control system efficiency. ??System Integrations: Optimising multiple stack configurations to enhance scalability. ??Hydraulic management and DC infrastructure testing: Fine-tuning energy management and grid integration. “This sandbox environment is a key milestone in our development roadmap,” said Ian Rock, Founder and CTO at TerraFlow. “It provides a flexible platform to test and refine our flow battery technology, ensuring we maximize efficiency and scalability before full-scale deployment.” The next phase is already in motion, as TerraFlow is set to launch a 1 MW-capable system later in Q2, demonstrating the scalability and commercial viability of its innovative flow battery technology. A Transformative Moment in Germany Germany has taken a historic step, voting to amend its constitution to allocate €100 billion toward climate action as part of a larger €500 billion package. While details are still emerging, this could be a pivotal moment for LDES funding. Storage will be indispensable in securing a flexible, decarbonised energy system. ?? LDES Council at BETD: Advocacy in Action At BETD 2025, we engaged with government leaders, policymakers, and financial institutions to drive momentum on storage deployment. Key discussions emphasised: ? Building a global market for LDES: We met with ministers and government leaders from Africa and Europe at the 18th?@German-African?Energy Forum,?discussing their?need to?support and?scale LDES solutions to meet the demand for resilient energy. ? LDES as the backbone of energy security: Countries recognize that storage is not just an enabler of renewables, but a security tool for grids. ? Policy & funding mechanisms: We advocated for storage targets and policy mechanisms, such as "cap and floor," to provide revenue certainty and accelerate investment in LDES. ??
