Over the past few months, we've covered the 6 Tenets of Lean Construction. How do we put these tenets into practice. The LCI has various tools, practices, and methodologies to help companies incorporate Lean thinking into their cultures. For more information, visit leanconstruction.org

6 Tenets of Lean Construction: Continuous Improvement. “Kaizen” is the Japanese word for continuous improvement. In a Lean project, team members at all levels are encouraged to voice their thoughts and provide suggestions for how processes can be improved. Building that environment starts at the management level and requires a team that is built on its members trusting one another. By maintaining a mindset of continuous improvement, we can foster an environment where innovation can occur.

6 Tenets of Lean Construction: Generate Value. Here at the Lean Construction Institute, we believe that Waste and Value are two sides of the same coin, one a Yin to the other’s Yang. Thus, each time we reduce waste in a process, we are adding value. Generating value can therefore be seen as the ultimate goal of Lean thinking. But to generate value in a project, you must do more than simply remove waste throughout project processes – you must understand what value means in the context of the project itself and train team members to know the Value Proposition of the project. The Value Proposition is what the owner wants from the project and process. The Value Proposition should be documented and displayed prominently internally so the team understands what is driving the project forward.

6 Tenets of Lean Construction: Focus on Flow. In the design and construction industry, one of the biggest burdens on project timelines is a lack of process flow. Teams and their members are constantly stuck waiting around for work to be completed by someone else, whether it’s a hand-off that needs to happen, parts that need to arrive, or work that got delayed, thus backing up the overall schedule. One of the easiest methods for addressing time waste is to focus on project flow, ensuring that processes are put together in a way that considers everyone’s role in the project and what they need to begin or finish their work.

6 Tenets of Lean Construction: Eliminate Waste. In the world of Lean, waste is defined as anything that doesn’t directly create value; waste can be thought of as the antithesis to value. Waste occurs during both the design and construction phases of a project. It is just as important to reduce waste in the design phase as it is during the construction phase.

As part of LCI's most crucial principle—Respect for People—we are bringing awareness to mental health in the construction industry during Construction Suicide Prevention Week. With 53.2 suicides per 100,000 workers, construction has among the highest suicide rates of any industry, with deaths by suicide five times higher than all other construction deaths combined. Sept. 9- 13 is Construction Suicide Prevention Week 2024. During this time, the construction industry is taking a stand to fight the stigma surrounding mental illness and doing what we can to help prevent any others in our field from dying by suicide. We at LCI STL CoP are committed to these efforts and invite you to do the same.?For more resources and information, visit https://lnkd.in/g8HFRcge
