“With our research, we’ve been able to improve our ability to introduce DNA into plant genomes. And by being able to transform plants and fungi more efficiently, we can improve our ability to make biofuels and bioproducts.” - Patrick Shih on how his group's recently published research in Nature Biotechnology will impact biofuel and bioproduct production https://lnkd.in/gt5pUFYa Joint BioEnergy Institute Berkeley Lab #BioBSE #BioEGSB

Using integrated research teams to solve national challenges in energy, environment, health and biomanufacturing.
关于我们
Berkeley Lab's Biosciences Area forges multidisciplinary teams to solve national challenges in energy, environment, and health issues, as well as advance the engineering of biological systems for sustainable manufacturing. Biosciences Area research is coordinated through three Divisions and one User Facility: Biological Systems and Engineering, Environmental Genomics and Systems Biology, Molecular Biophysics and Integrated Bioimaging and the National User Facility DOE Joint Genome Institute. Enabled by Berkeley Lab’s world-class user facilities and complementary research programs, our culture of team science and cross-disciplinary research will enable us to contribute groundbreaking discoveries and innovative solutions to complex scientific and societal challenges.

??The deadline for our next Functional Genomics call is Jan. 30, 2025.?? More at https://lnkd.in/eWyWJ4WN Below, hear from JGI user Tae Seok Moon of the J. Craig Venter Institute on his experiences working with the JGI's DNA Synthesis Program. Proposals for our Functional Genomics call should focus on projects that translate genomic information into biological function, and leverage our DNA synthesis & omics capabilities to enhance understanding of gene and genome function — particularly those not readily achievable without the capabilities and expertise available at the JGI. Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) scientists mapped how nearly 6 million galaxies cluster across 11 billion years of cosmic history. Their observations line up with what Einstein's theory of general relativity predicts. https://lnkd.in/gHGM4zUN

Our Visiting Faculty Program offers a unique opportunity for faculty members at colleges or universities that may not otherwise work with our national laboratories to collaborate with scientists there. The program aims to enhance the visiting faculty’s research competitiveness and STEM instruction. It also helps expand and diversify the workforce vital to DOE’s mission areas. By studying the genes of land plants’ closest algal relative,?Zygnematophyceae, scientists have enhanced our understanding of how early plants transitioned from water to land. Through the Community Science Program of the Joint Genome Institute, scientists sequenced the genomes of four?Zygnematophyceae?algae, which were isolated from diverse freshwater environments. These led to highly detailed assemblies for three strains of?Zygnema circumcarinatum. https://lnkd.in/gSjjRHAf Berkeley Lab
