Solar panels are officially up at BUILD Chicago. Along with being a welcoming, vibrant, and safe space for the Austin community to enjoy, BUILD wanted its new campus to be environmentally sustainable. The panels span the roof of the existing 10,000-sq-ft building plus the new 41,000-sq-ft facility, producing approximately 97,433 kilowatt hours per year. That is estimated to save 141,214 lbs of CO2 emissions per year, equivalent to planting 36.48 acres of trees annually. BUILD is a part of Open House Chicago again this year. The Open House will run throughout the weekend of October 19h-20th. Visit the link to learn more about this free event: https://lnkd.in/gxWKw9wY Photos: Ben Bowen

#TBT to one of our early projects with Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation, which we have worked with since the firm's founding. Rosa Parks Apartments consists of 94 affordable rental apartments in 8 buildings scattered across 21 city lots in the West Humboldt Park neighborhood of Chicago. Soon after the building's completion, we worked with Bickerdike, Architreasures, and community members to design a large mosaic tile project that welcomes residents home. Completed in 2010, the buildings continue to provide affordable housing in areas that are becoming increasingly less affordable.

Last week, Mitchell Hawkins teamed up with GRAPHISOFT for a lecture focused on Good Design for the Community at his alma mater, Illinois Institute of Technology. While exploring how LBBA creates buildings and spaces that empower communities from within, Mitchell highlighted a few projects that help revitalize neighborhoods, discussed the individual’s role as a design professional, and presented our firm’s approach to community-focused design. Thank you Graphisoft and IITAIAS for letting us be a part of this event!

Thank you to Kent State University and the YMCA for organizing yesterday's panel focused on community voices in the design process. LBBA's Julia Mosqueda participated alongside Perry Strong from Studio Gang and Maya Bird-Murphy from Mobile Makers. Scott Hurst from Gensler moderated the conversation, which ranged from hyperlocal community engagement processes to the importance of strong partnerships with individuals who have intimate knowledge of the area surrounding a project. All panelists noted that while social design was not part of their school curriculum, its increasing integration into projects today is invaluable.
