Lazarex is on a mission to change the way communities fight cancer. That’s what the Lazarex Cancer Wellness HUBs are all about. The HUBs are safe spaces that provide culturally appropriate cancer education, resources, and support across the continuum of care. From prevention to survivorship, we're working to improve health outcomes and achieve equity. The HUBs operate in Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and the East Bay, offering a community-led approach to addressing cancer disparities. Shortly after becoming a caregiver to Pedro, her husband of 33 years, Lourdes Valdez began to miss being out and about. She wanted to support her husband through every step of his battle with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer — but she also felt isolated. That’s why frequent calls and check-ins with Wendy Pech have become an important part of the couple’s cancer journey. They met Wendy, a Lazarex Cancer Care Companion, at the Weingart East Los Angeles YMCA — part of our Cancer Wellness HUB program designed to connect underserved communities with healthcare resources. Wendy's regular check-ins have become crucial for the couple. She brings sewing materials to occupy Lourdes' mind and healthy food for Pedro. "It helps my anxiety," Lourdes says. "Having Wendy come by feels like a genuine friendship." Pedro, a prostate cancer survivor, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma five years ago. Though he recently paused chemotherapy due to side effects, the couple expects to have a new treatment plan soon. This week, Lazarex Founder Dana Dornsife joined #CGI2024 to discuss healthcare equity on a global stage. Dana Dornsife was invited to speak on the panel, “Unlocking Healthcare Excellence Through Data, Diversity, and Access.” She spoke about the importance of removing barriers to clinical trials, so advanced cancer treatment is accessible to everyone. When antibiotics didn’t make the worrisome lump in Oleksiy’s neck go away, the software security engineer knew he needed to act — and quickly. He flew to Moldova for tests, where he was diagnosed with a rare T-cell lymphoma. Determined to find the most advanced treatment, Oleksiy and his wife drove 2,000 miles to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston for a clinical trial. The travel costs quickly added up, but that's when they discovered Lazarex Cancer Foundation. Now in complete remission since July 2023, Oleksiy runs? five miles daily and is using his experience to raise awareness about cancer treatment. Lazarex Cancer Foundation is suspending its clinical trial travel reimbursement activities through our CARE program, as of August 31. We will continue to support cancer patients through our Cancer Wellness HUBs and Advocacy work. However, funding for the CARE program has run out. We understand the personal toll this financial burden takes on cancer patients and their families. We firmly believe solutions exist, but we cannot tackle this systemic problem alone. We will continue to work to disrupt the system and drive change through our advocacy efforts and our work at the community level through our Lazarex Cancer Wellness HUB Program.
