Each year, the Irish Tatler recognizes the contributions of Irish women in a variety of categories, including media, literature, and business. Their science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) Award has previously been given to Niamh Donnelly, Patricia Scanlon, Linda Doyle, and others. Now in its 24th year, the Irish Tatler "Women of the Year" awards is the original and most respected platform for female achievement in Ireland. This year the 2024 STEM Award was presented to Berkeley Lab scientist Sinead Griffin. Congrats!! Next up, our STEM Award, and this year's winner is an Irish physicist working at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California on condensed matter physics and materials science. She became a science and mainstream superstar within the last year for her research on room-temperature superconductors. Developing superconductivity that works at room temperature is one of the holy grails of modern scientific research. It would be a revolutionary solution to the energy crisis and it would enable the creation of magnetically levitating trains. Dubliner Sinead Griffin’s research was one of the first to refute the claim that a South Korean lab had created the world’s first using a material called LK-99 – when scientists rushed to replicate it, they didn’t find the same result. What Griffin did was different; instead of replicating the experiment, she tried to see if it was possible tyo refute the claim through theory alone, cutting down the number of iterations needed to find superconductivity at room temperature from billions to a handful. In doing so, she made a big leap forward in how scientists understand the subject. In a field crowded with Nobel prizes and multi-million dollar labs in the US and China, Griffin is an agent of change, and a homegrown voice pushing the conversation forward. #WOMENOF24 #IrishTatlerxDavy
