On Friday, Lawhon held our annual Souper Bowl Cookoff! With nine entries in the competition, the battle for Souper Bowl Champion was fierce - but for the second year in a row, Jason Earley took home the title with his smoked beef cheek French onion soup! Will he pull off a three-peat next year, or will he be defeated like Kansas City? Only time will tell! We hope everyone had a fantastic Super Bowl weekend!

In 2025, Lawhon is launching a new "Lunch and Leisure" series designed to promote wellness and offer employees a chance to learn about exciting developments and projects happening across departments. Our first session kicked off with a deep dive into the world of mussels! We explored the importance of mussels, played interactive games, checked out a Trash to Treasure display, and had fun trying on scuba gear. We’re excited to continue this series and keep fostering cross-department learning and team wellness at Lawhon!

This past mussel survey season at Lawhon & Associates has been one of our most successful and rewarding yet! Our dedicated L&A mussel team completed 20 comprehensive mussel surveys across streams and rivers, contributing valuable data to the conservation and management of freshwater mussels in Ohio. One of the season's highlights was the discovery of over 60 pondhorn mussels (Uniomerus tetralasmus) at Van Buren Lake in Van Buren State Park — the largest single population of this species ever recorded in Ohio! These mussels were rehomed at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium's Watters Aquatic Conservation Center, where they will support scientific research and future reintroduction efforts into Ohio waterways. We were also thrilled to document the presence of the round hickorynut (Obovaria subrotunda), a federally threatened species, in the Little Muskingum River. This finding is a promising sign of the health and biodiversity of the region’s aquatic ecosystems. This season’s success was made possible through meticulous fieldwork, strong collaboration, and a shared commitment to protecting Ohio's freshwater mussels. At Lawhon & Associates, we are proud to contribute to conservation efforts that will help shape the future of these vital species and the ecosystems they support.

It's National Chicken Lady Day! To celebrate, we're spotlighting two of our very own "Chicken Ladies" here at Lawhon & Associates, who have embraced the joys (and quirks) of raising backyard chickens. Check out their unique stories: Heather Shiets "My chicken journey began a couple of years ago when I fell in love with baby chicks at Tractor Supply. After two years of researching, I felt ready to start raising my own flock. With my husband’s support, we built a coop and chicken run, and in July, I brought home my baby chicks! We raised them from just a few days old in a brooder in our basement (10/10 do not recommend because of the dust!) until they were ready for their ‘McMansion’ coop. My flock of 8 hens is named after female singers: June & Josie (Rhode Island Reds), Patsy & Janis (Plymouth Barred Rocks), Blondie & Dolores (Black Australorps), and Linda & Loretta (Midnight Marans). We’re now on egg-laying watch, as my girls are about 19 weeks old! Each day, they bring so much entertainment with their personalities and shenanigans. Safe to say, I’m officially a ‘crazy chicken lady!’" Jackie Bruns "I'm Jackie, and my family and I have been raising chickens for the last year and a half. Our dream has always been to live in the country and raise our kids with the responsibility of caring for animals. It was such a joy watching our little ones play with the chicks when they arrived, and now, the chickens are like family, each with a unique personality. One of our hens even jumps into the minivan when we're heading out! We plan to keep expanding our flock and raising animals as our kids grow. It’s an amazing way to live sustainably and learn new things every day. If you're thinking about living more sustainably, chickens are a fantastic start!"
