  • Elections for LSSO Executive positions will be taking place during this year’s Annual General Meeting. Candidates must be enrolled in an undergraduate law program (e.g., JD, JD/MBA, or other related programs) at an Ontario law school during the 2024-2025 school year. The four positions for election are: (1) President; (2) Vice-President (Internal); (3) Vice-President (External); (4) Equity Officer Interested candidates are required to submit a 250 to 500-word platform to [email protected]. During the AGM, candidates will have an opportunity to give a brief (2-3 minutes) speech and answer questions from the Council. Platforms are currently being accepted on a rolling basis. All confirmed candidates will receive an email with more information on election procedures after this date. Guidelines for platform submissions: - Please include your email address; - Platforms should be submitted in a Word document; - Platforms must include a brief statement describing the candidate’s eligibility for election (i.e., year of study, degree program, name of law school); - Platforms must indicate which position the candidate is running for.     The Law Society of Ontario is inviting lawyers, paralegals, law students, paralegal students, licensing candidates and representatives of legal organizations and associations to apply for membership in the Equity Advisory Group. What is the Equity Advisory Group? The Equity Advisory Group (EAG) represents the diverse interests of lawyers and paralegals who identify as a member of one or more equity-seeking groups. The EAG advises the Law Society on issues affecting various equity-seeking communities in order to promote equity, diversity and inclusion in the legal professions. The Law Society has consulted with the EAG for more than 20 years. The EAG’s membership consists of up to 12 individual and 12 organizational members. All members serve three-year terms. Why is it looking for new members? The current membership term for EAG members will?end in June. The EAG is currently looking for new individual and organizational members for upcoming three-year terms ending in 2027. All positions are served on a voluntary basis. What type of work does the EAG do? The Law Society frequently consults with the EAG for advice and input on the development of policies and practices related to equity, both within the Law Society and the profession. The EAG also provides submissions on Law Society reports and studies relating to equity issues within the professions. Who can apply? The EAG is currently seeking applications from interested individuals and organizations who identify or work with or on issues affecting (but not limited to) communities of racialized individuals, immigrants and refugees, people with disabilities, people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex, queer, questioning or Two-Spirited (2SLGBTQI+), Francophones and women. What is the time commitment? EAG members are expected to attend 7 to 10 virtual meetings per year. EAG members will also be expected to dedicate time to tasks such as reviewing and providing input. The expected time commitment is approximately 3 to 5 hours per month. EAG members are encouraged to attend various equity events, meetings, and programs organized by the Law Society. To apply, please send your curriculum vitae and a brief statement of interest outlining why you are interested in joining the EAG, including any relevant experiences and activities. Please highlight any relevant experience you have in the areas of access to justice, human rights, anti-racism and anti-oppression, equity and diversity, social justice and employment equity. If you are applying as a legal organization or association, please includes information about your organization or association’s membership, mandate, activities, community engagement and other relevant information.
