The Law Office of the Pennington County Public Defender is appointed by the courts of Pennington County to represent indigent persons, who by law are entitled to be represented by an attorney in the proceeding in which they are involved. The attorneys in the Public Defender's Office primarily represent adults and juveniles charged with crimes. Our attorneys also represent persons for mental and alcohol commitments, other juvenile court proceedings, and appeals and post-conviction proceedings.

The holidays flew by as we prepared to move into our new building! Congratulations to Brandy Straw for winning the Pennington County Ugly Sweater contest. Thank you to our Spirit Committee for planning an elegant Christmas party at the Catalyst Theater Company and a festive Secret Santa office party. The 6th Amendment Center's Right to Counsel in South Dakota report (link in comments) noted in Finding 7:?“The state has no workload standards, resulting in appointed attorneys carrying workloads that exceed national standards.”?Director Eric Whitcher emphasizes the importance that the Commission on Indigent Defense set these standards.?Director Whitcher also concludes that appointed counsel is needlessly exacerbated due to the radically different drug laws South Dakota has compared to any other state. https://lnkd.in/g9Mh8YJf
