Form Energy, which makes iron-air batteries out of an old steel factory in West Virginia, just closed a $405 million Series F venture round. The round, led by T. Rowe Price, brings Form’s fundraising total to more than $1.2 billion. The fundraise marks a new phase for the long-duration energy storage company: commercial scale. The build-out has exceeded my expectations,” said Gabriel Kra, managing director and co-founder of Prelude Ventures, which participated in the round. The next big milestone: proving the commercial-scale batteries work as advertised. https://lnkd.in/emQZYnB9

Page Crahan is general manager of Tapestry, X, the moonshot factory for the electric grid. Tapestry is focused on creating highly accurate simulations of the grid to forecast how it will behave from milliseconds to decades ahead. Before joining X, Page held roles as a go-to-market and commercial leader and advisor at several start-ups, two of which attained ‘unicorn’ status. She’s an expert in business model innovation, customer acquisition, product design, and scaling hyper-growth teams. At Transition-AI 2024, she will take part in a panel discussion diving deep into the outlook for load growth driven by data center demand from AI alongside Jeremy Renshaw of EPRI, Amanda Peterson Corio of Google, and Chris Shelton of The AES Corporation. What short-term options are there for bringing down the energy intensity of AI?? Dion Harris, the director of accelerated solutions for NVIDIA’s data center portfolio, is bullish on the combined impact of accelerated computing and AI efficiency gains. “In the short-term, most companies who are building hyperscale data centers can't just put one up tomorrow or even six months from now,” Harris told?Latitude Media. “So the first question is, ‘how can we make our data center as efficient as possible?’” https://lnkd.in/ev47DTfM

It’s a precarious moment for scaling direct air capture, and carbon removal more broadly. The sector has had a few successful deployments but is?very much still proving the technology. And the hurdles on the path to full commercialization are many. But startups will lose the public’s trust if they aren’t transparent about the challenges of scaling their technologies, said Andreas Aepli, chief financial officer of Climeworks, on an episode of the?Catalyst?podcast. https://lnkd.in/e3Mkv_Qp

NewRange Copper Nickel is a Minnesota company pursuing a new copper, nickel, and cobalt mine in the northeastern part of the state, called NorthMet. It would supply minerals for a wide range of clean energy technologies. But under a previous owner, the project faced setbacks — in part because of a lack of engagement with local tribes. “I think part of that came from a lack of understanding of the tribe's sovereignty and their water quality standards,” said the company’s president and general manager Tannice McCoy. On this latest sponsored episode, Stephen Lacey interviews Tannice McCoy and Jenna Lehti about how NewRange is revamping its approach to tribal engagement: https://lnkd.in/erAfuTZH
