We recently published an important piece on CALó News that exposes the troubling racial disparities in how California wildfires impact communities. The data from January's LA County fires tells a devastating story: Latino workers make up 36% of the workforce in fire-affected areas despite being just 23% of residents. In historically Black Altadena, nearly half of Black households saw their homes destroyed or damaged - 30% higher than their neighbors. Thank you UCLA and UCLA Latino Policy & Politics Institute for the excellent data. These aren't random statistics. They reflect decades of housing discrimination and economic inequality that have left Black and Latino communities disproportionately vulnerable to disasters. With climate change making these disasters more frequent, our response can't simply restore what was lost - we must build more equitable, resilient communities. Thank you CALó News. Thank you to the Public Policy Institute of California for this important report on income inequality in California. The data underscores the significant disparities facing Latino families, who earn just 52 cents for every dollar earned by white families. Even more concerning, Latino and Black families make up 44% of all California families but represent 55% of those at the bottom 10% of income earners—while making up only 11% of those at the top. These disparities are deeply rooted in educational access, labor market discrimination, and barriers to homeownership—all of which limit wealth-building opportunities for Latino communities. Addressing these challenges requires bold strategies that promote economic mobility, equitable access to education, and wealth-building policies. The report also highlights how tax policies and safety net programs help narrow income inequality, reducing the income gap by 28% between higher- and lower-income families. However, we must go further to ensure that Latino families have the resources and opportunities to thrive. Latinos are a driving force in California’s economy—but income inequality continues to hold too many families back. Let’s work together to close these gaps and build a more inclusive, prosperous future. Read the report: https://lnkd.in/gB3BcpnJ #EconomicEquity #LatinoWealth #IncomeInequality #California

In the last election, Latino voters made one thing clear: they wanted real economic relief. Instead, inflation continues to strain families, homeownership remains out of reach, and working-class households are left wondering when the promised change will come. Our latest piece for?The Latino Newsletter?explains how Trump’s economic policies are shaping up—and why working-class Latinos are still waiting for the promised results. Tax breaks for the ultra-rich, mass government layoffs, and rising costs aren’t the relief families hoped for. Thank you to The Latino Newsletter for publishing this piece and consistently providing critical coverage of the issues that matter most to our community. ?? Protecting Public Assets & Holding OpenAI Accountable ?? Today, LatinoProsperity, alongside The San Francisco Foundation and a coalition of leading nonprofits and philanthropic organizations, formally requested that California Attorney General Rob Bonta take immediate action to protect OpenAI's charitable assets, once valued at up to $157 billion. As OpenAI moves toward for-profit conversion, we must ensure that assets originally intended for public benefit remain protected. History has shown that nonprofit-to-for-profit conversions must be held to the highest standards—just as California did with major healthcare entities in the past. Failure to uphold charitable trust laws could set a dangerous precedent, undermining the integrity of the nonprofit sector. We are calling on the Attorney General to act swiftly to investigate OpenAI’s compliance and ensure that its restructuring does not come at the expense of the public good. Read our full letter to Attorney General Bonta and the press release below. ?? Let’s ensure that the future of AI serves everyone, not just private investors. #LatinoProsperity #AI #Nonprofit #PublicBenefit #Accountability #California #OpenAI Thank you to the signatories of this effort: Asian Law Caucus, California Black Freedom Fund, California Calls, California Community Builders, California Community Foundation, The California Wellness Foundation, Catalyst California, Center for Empowered Politics, Economic Security Project, Evelyn and Walter Haas, Jr. Fund, Innovate Public Schools, Kapor Foundation, Latina Futures 2050 Lab, Latino Community Foundation, Liberty Hill Foundation, Omidyar Network LLC, PICO California, Public Advocates, Rise Economy, Strategic Actions for a Just Economy, TechEquity, The California Endowment, The James Irvine Foundation, URBAN LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT INSTITUTE and Weingart Foundation https://lnkd.in/g2ndBtRe

?? Latinas Leading the Way in Economic Power and Equity ?? This week in Washington, DC, I had the incredible privilege of meeting with trailblazing Latina leaders shaping our nation's economic landscape: ? Federal Reserve Governor Adriana Kugler – the first-ever Latina/o appointed to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in its 110-year history and the highest-ranking Latina in any economic position in the country. ? Janis Bowdler – the first Counselor for Racial Equity at the U.S. Department of Treasury, driving transformative change within one of the country’s most powerful institutions. ? Tonantzin Carmona – the youngest Latina Economic Advisor at the National Economic Council, bringing exciting perspectives to the White House’s economic strategies. Their leadership highlights the power of Latinas breaking barriers in economic policy, proving that representation matters in the most influential decision-making spaces. I was also honored to engage with a remarkable group of leaders working tirelessly to uplift our communities: Annie Donovan, Raza Development Fund, Luis Granados, Mission Economic Development Agency, Marla Bilonick, National Association of Latino Community Asset Builders, and Anna Alvarez Boyd, PCC, LatinoProsperity Advisory Board Member. Thank you,?Robert Raben,?for allowing us to use your beautiful conference room for our lunch discussion. The discussions were rich, inspiring, and filled with actionable insights. Together, we are building a future where economic equity and wealth creation are at the forefront for Latino communities nationwide. The collective brilliance and dedication of our leaders reaffirm my belief that we are at a turning point—Latinas are not only advocating for change but leading it. ?? Let’s continue to celebrate and amplify these voices as we work toward a more equitable and inclusive economy. #LatinaLeadership #EconomicEquity #LatinoWealth #FederalReserve #TreasuryDepartment #LatinoProsperity
