关于我们

Latino Outdoors offers free outdoor activities and supports people who are receiving their introduction to nature, creating a welcoming and family-friendly environment with outings that weave together aspects of culture, community, wellness, and connection. Guided by LO’s theory of change, volunteers craft outdoor experiences that emphasize connections between people, place, process, and policy. The goals are to inspire participants’ conservation ethic, encourage their evolving engagement in outdoor recreation, and perhaps most importantly, recognize and celebrate the different ways in which diverse communities already connect with the outdoors. LO believes these outcomes will arise naturally if individuals and communities have an equitable opportunity to play and recreate outdoors.

We're celebrating the voices of women in the environmental sector! This week, we're excited to share our conversation with Chela Garcia Irlando of Next 100 Coalition. Chela discusses her career journey, offers advice for those entering the environmental sector, and shares how she manages burnout as a mother of two young children. "I’m learning to slow down and give myself grace...I can’t be effective if I’m running on empty. The support of mentors, peers, and an incredible team has been invaluable in navigating the many challenges that arise in this role. Balancing motherhood and being a CEO remains incredibly difficult, despite working in an understanding sector. The guilt and constant trade-offs are real, and I take it one day at a time."

    • Chela Garcia Irlando. No matter the role, my focus has always been on creating lasting impact through strategic leadership and community engagement.
    • Can you share your career journey? My career path has been dynamic and nonlinear, shaped by my deep commitment to driving meaningful change. I have navigated between policy development, electoral campaigns, nonprofit leadership, coalition building, and grassroots advocacy, each experience reinforcing my dedication to advancing collaborative power and fostering equitable systemic transformation.

No matter the role, my focus has always been on creating lasting impact through strategic leadership and community engagement.
    • Have you faced any challenges along the way? Burnout has been a constant challenge throughout my career, manifesting in different ways at various stages. Early on, I pushed myself to the limit...This relentless pace nearly drove me away from the field entirely.

Now, as a more experienced professional and a mother of two young children, I’m learning to slow down and give myself grace...I can’t be effective if I’m running on empty. The support of mentors, peers, and an incredible team has been invaluable in navigating the many challenges that arise in this role.

My advice for young professionals is to embrace the journey and uncertainty of navigating these roles, avoid comparison, and build a strong support network—it will be your greatest asset.
    • Networking is crucial. Keep in touch with the connections you make, even if they don’t seem immediately relevant. Relationships in this field often come full circle, and one day, you may find yourself in a position to open doors for others.
    • What advice would you give to young professionals considering a career in the environmental sector? A career in the environmental sector is rarely a linear path, so embrace the twists and turns.

Early on broaden your horizons of the many possibilities to have an impact in this field – direct service, philanthropy, nonprofit management, government, policy, media, etc. Take advantage of volunteer opportunities—they provide hands-on experience, help you build relationships, and may open unexpected doors. You don’t have to commit long-term, but each experience expands your perspective and network. Attend free workshops, webinars, and events to keep learning and stay informed about evolving career possibilities and pathways for making an impact in ways that you would never have anticipated.

  • THIS WEDNESDAY! Join Javier Pineda of Mountain Dreamers and Latino Outdoors Colorado for Crecemos Outdoors: Intro to Snow Sports, a beginner-friendly webinar designed to introduce you to the world of skiing and snowboarding! Javier Pineda is an advocate for immigrant inclusion in the outdoor industry. Born in Michoacán, Mexico, Javier moved to Summit County, Colorado where he faced economic and social barriers that often kept immigrant families away from outdoor sports. Despite these challenges, his passion for snowboarding and community-building only grew stronger. Javier co-founded Mountain Dreamers, a nonprofit dedicated to immigrant rights and advocacy, and later launched OSO Outdoors, a program that provides free ski and snowboarding lessons to those traditionally excluded from these opportunities. His work has been featured in Backcountry Magazine, Ski Magazine, NPR, The Colorado Sun, and more, and his efforts are redefining what it means to belong in the mountain community. Drop your snow sports preguntas for Javier in the comments and we’ll make sure to answer it on the webinar. Tune in on 3/19 at 4pm PST on youtube.com/latinooutdoors ?Nos vemos pronto! I've appreciated seeing the founding, growth, and work of Green 2.0, in many ways we've grown up together professionally in the conservation space. Here is a little snippet of how I've thought about the approach I've taken to the jobs I've had (and currently have!)

  • "Words can’t capture everything from this incredibly memorable, hilarious, loving, and chilly weekend! A group of us headed to Lake Placid in the Adirondacks to experience winter camping & sports—for the first time ever for many of us! We danced, learned to cross-country ski (during the day and at night to celebrate the upcoming Worm Moon), snow shoed, cooked warming meals like pozole y sancocho (and attempted some campfire desserts), practiced yoga, built fires, and explored the Village of Lake Placid. The snow blanketed this pristine wilderness region just as we arrived and the sky cleared up at night to show us beautiful constellations and planets in full view! This was truly one of our most memorable campouts to-date and all possible because of the magic brought by each individual person and for the generous hospitality of our amazing partners—un montón de agradecimiento y amor to Adirondack Mountain Club and The Nature Conservancy in NY for helping us create memories we’ll never forget! And, special shout-outs to Kate at TNC & Eliza and Daria from ADK for teaching us how to better explore these great outdoors safely and in community!" Gracias to the team at Latino Outdoors NYC and to their regional partners for organizing this incredible wintertime experience. ???? This is why we do what we do.
