In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we celebrate Afro-Latina leaders whose contributions, service, creativity, and advocacy have paved the way for greater representation in arts and sciences:
?? Ivelyse Andino: A Bronx-made Black Puerto Rican who dares to imagine and create the future of health for the people as a visionary healthcare abolitionist and health equity strategist building community at the intersection of health, equity, and tech. She uses her platform to advocate for comprehensive healthcare fluency, an original concept created to bridge the gap between systemically marginalized communities and the medical system. Her mission is to engage, equip, and empower all people to understand and advocate for their health. She plays an imperative role as the founder and CEO of?Radical Health, the first Latina-owned-and-operated Benefit Corporation in NYC.
??Dr. Jessica Esquivel, Ph.D: One of less than 100 Black women with a PhD in physics in the country, the second Black woman to graduate with a PhD in physics from Syracuse University, and the third Black woman to hold an Associate Scientist position at Fermilab. Dr. Esquivel, an Afro-Latine physicist, is also a recognized advocate for creating just and equitable spaces in physics, focusing on the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality. She discusses what it means to be neurodivergent and working as a queer woman of color in an industry that lacks diversity. She recently did a TED Talk?entitled?"The Queer Universe: A quantum explanation."
??Dr. Analiz Rodriguez MD, PhD, MBA, FAANS: As an Afro-Dominican and Puerto Rican, Dr. Rodriguez knew she wanted to be a doctor early on. Now, she is an accomplished neurosurgeon and research scientist who graduated in three years from high school and college. Then, at 19, Dr. Rodriguez started medical school and completed the MD/PhD combined program in six years — receiving her PhD at 23 and her MD at 25. She is committed to supporting Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities to thrive in systems that were not built for us; it's her passion to provide medical transparency to BIPOC that drives her to educate and speak out on racial health inequities.
