Latinos are a driving force of Georgia’s economy. Strong Latino population growth is fueling economic growth in a state that prides itself in being No. 1 for business. Yet, for all the prosperity they create, Latinos lag in economic and social equity. This is where the work of the Latin American Association comes in. For 50 years, the LAA has helped Latinos overcome the barriers to economic mobility and self-sufficiency. Along the way, its footprint has extended beyond Buford Highway, to Gwinnet County and northwest Georgia. The LAA is a one-stop shop. Here clients can come in for crisis intervention and immigrants can explore options to get immigration benefits. Adults can learn English and computer skills and connect with employers. Latinas can make their entrepreneurship dreams a reality. The LAA is the catalyst that moves Latinos toward achieving the American dream and enjoying prosperity. Georgia’s economy stands to gain from Latinos’ prosperity. When Latinos thrive, Georgia prospers.

Our "Together for a Healthy Life" program, led by Health Coaches Melisa Nichols and Milagro Polo, held a fun and engaging session last month with several of our cohorts! Our partners Vida Fearless had our participants moving their bodies and helping them achieve their goals ???? This transformative 3-year diabetes prevention initiative integrates a CDC-approved lifestyle change program with culturally relevant services. We go beyond conventional approaches by incorporating engaging activities such as Zumba??, Whatsapp chats??, emphasizing family dynamics????????, exploring diverse food traditions???, and providing mental health??♀? education sessions and referrals. Our comprehensive approach also involves app-based monitoring, creating a holistic strategy to reduce the risk of Type 2 diabetes. In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month ??, we’ve partnered with the City of Atlanta and the Sara J. González Memorial Park to showcase some of the incredible art pieces ?? submitted for the Portraying the Immigrant Experience Art Contest! From now until November 1 ???, you can stroll through the park ?? and explore the powerful works created by students ages 12-25, reflecting on how Latinos have impacted Georgia. This park holds a special place in the Latino community. Atlanta's Sara J. González Memorial Park is the first park in Georgia named in honor of a Latino individual. Sara J. González was a trailblazing advocate for Latinos in the state, and after her passing in 2008, her daughter, Isabel González Whitaker along with the City of Atlanta, began the effort to establish this historic park.
