President Biden has just 60 days left of his term. 60 days left to fulfill his promise to release federal cannabis prisoners. That's why we were joined yesterday on Capitol Hill by members of Congress including Rep. Ayanna Pressley, Rep. James E. Clyburn, Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, and Rep. Ilhan Omar, formerly incarcerated people and their families, and fellow advocates. We came together to send a congressional letter—signed by more than 50 members of Congress—to President Biden, urging him to grant clemency to the more than 3,000 people currently in federal prison for cannabis-related offenses. The Last Prisoner Project is a nonprofit working to redress the harms of cannabis criminalization and the War on Drugs.
关于我们
The Last Prisoner Project (LPP) is a national, nonpartisan nonprofit organization dedicated to cannabis criminal justice reform with the goal of releasing every last cannabis prisoner. We aim to end America’s policy of cannabis criminalization, as well as to repair the harms of this discriminatory and counterproductive crusade. We seek to redress the past and continuing harms of these unjust laws through legal intervention, direct constituent support, advocacy campaigns, and policy change. Last week, in honor of Veteran's Day, California Governor Newsom used his power to pardon five veterans. One of those individuals was U.S. Air Force veteran Alex Zonn who was sentenced to three years probation and 60 days in jail for a cannabis-related offense in 1970. Now, 54 years later, Alex Zonn finally has the justice he deserves. We urge all governors and President Biden to use their clemency power to not only pardon cannabis records, but release those still incarcerated so they can be reunited with their families for the holidays. President Biden has 68 days left in office. 68 days to fulfill his promise that “no one should be in jail for marijuana.” Although the Biden Administration has made it clear that cannabis reform, especially as a racial justice issue, is a priority, the President has only granted 1.4% of all clemency petitions. President Trump commuted 16 people for cannabis offenses but only pardoned six people. While Biden has pardoned over 13,000, he has only commuted 11 people for cannabis offenses; there is still time, though. President Obama nearly doubled his total commutations in a single month during the end of his last term in office. President Obama's total clemency grants seem comparatively low because his administration encouraged federal prisoners to apply for clemency under an official program known as the Clemency Initiative. This resulted in the most clemency petitions of any administration on record and the most commutations since Truman. Join our #Countdown4Clemency campaign urging President Biden to expand his cannabis pardons and release ALL federal cannabis prisoners! https://lnkd.in/e4gRmNg2
