Los Angeles Southwest College (LASC) is located in southwest Los Angeles, approximately 20 minutes south of downtown Los Angeles, 15 minutes east of the Pacific Ocean, and 10 minutes north of Los Angeles International Airport. Our areas of service include the cities of Los Angeles, Inglewood, Hawthorne, and Gardena. The smallest of nine colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District, LASC, home of the Cougars, is also the fiercest with a passion for social justice, community engagement, and supporting students to overcome all obstacles to achieve their personal and professional dreams. LASC continues to cultivate a culture of care, being intentional about diversity and student success. The College serves 100% students of color, predominantly African American and Latinx. Since its founding in 1967, LASC has been devoted to social justice, closing equity gaps, and being a leader within the community to create intentional social change. We pursue academic excellence in all levels and are devoted to empowering students to find their voices, their passions, and achieving the freedom to live the lives they want to live. Another week of football coming up this Saturday at Los Angeles Southwest College, broadcast by #LASC students pursuing #CTE. I'm so proud to be the one area community college giving our students this platform to learn these skills and prepare for careers in the entertainment industry. (And of course, it doesn't hurt to share the love to our football and men's and women's basketball teams, too!) Big thanks to Ted Bendrick and the TVX squad for their professional support.

57 years ago, the dream of LASC's principal founder, Odessa B. Cox was realized. According to media reports, classes started Sept. 11, 1967, with more than 600 students registered and 22 full-time faculty members. LASC's first president was Dr. John Grasham, and the original curricula revolved around liberal arts and academic transfer. Today LASC students, faculty, staff, and alumni gathered to honor our origins, celebrate our legacy, and remember the individuals who played pivotal roles in our establishment. After a moment of silence for the tragic events of 2011, the LASC Associated Student Organization welcomed guests to the ceremony which included reading from the archives, testimonials, and singing of the Alma Mater, "Together We Stand."

The Black Celebration Graduation hosted by LASC was an absolute masters class for showing unapologetically black students the love and encouragement they need to move to the next level in their higher education journey. Thank you Dr. Battle, Black Faculty Staff Association, AAOI, Dr. Regina Smith, LACCD, Tri-Chairs for the Black Celebration committee, LASC administrators, faculty, classified, and students for an outstanding arrangement. Special shoutout to LASC facilities and event planning colleagues. Chancellor Dr. Rodriguez, President of the Board Nichelle Henderson, First Vice President of the Board Dr. Iino. What an honor to have a Daughter of the community Ms. YO-YO Whitaker as the Mistress of Ceremony and Ms. Katessa Charles, an attorney and principal at Jackson Lewis P.C. as the Keynote Speaker; absolutely amazing. Thank you Dr. Tangelia Alfred, LASC’s VPSS and the over 40 LASC volunteers colleagues from various constituencies across the college. Thank you Presidents, Dr. Gebru, Dr. McQuarters, Dr. Ornelas, Dr. Ramon, Dr. Gribbons, Dr. Limbaugh, Dr. Dorado for showing the support of the power of nine colleges.
