At Larson & McGowin, our team is the foundation of our success, and we’re proud to highlight those who make a lasting impact. This month, we’re recognizing Brandon E. Smith, Portfolio Manager, for his leadership in forest management and dedication to the future of consulting forestry. Brandon’s role at L&M is multifaceted. He provides leadership for forest management operations across our offices in Greenville, AL, Birmingham, AL, and Wilmington, NC, overseeing approximately 350,000 acres of land. In addition to his management responsibilities, he also leads our recreation lease program company-wide. For Brandon, the most rewarding aspect of his work is seeing long-term projects come to life. He takes pride in helping clients achieve their goals—whether big or small—and values the opportunity to collaborate with top professionals in the industry. “Our firm brings together people with diverse backgrounds and forestry expertise, and working with them daily has been a key driver of my success,” he shares. While forestry may bring to mind the outdoors, Brandon emphasizes that the job extends far beyond the woods. “Foresters tend to be introverted, but in consulting, we take on many roles—accountant, finance manager, IT support, and even therapist at times. Relationships are the backbone of our success.” Brandon’s commitment to the profession goes beyond his day-to-day responsibilities. As the State Chair for the Alabama Chapter of The Association of Consulting Foresters (ACF), he is actively involved in mentoring the next generation. A recent initiative he helped spearhead was the development of an Introduction to Consulting Forestry course at Auburn University—an effort that took extensive coordination and hands-on participation from ACF members across the state. Outside of work, Brandon enjoys staying active outdoors, whether it’s kayaking, working on one of his many farm projects, or cheering on Kentucky football in the fall. His goals at L&M are clear: to uphold the highest ethical standards, exceed client expectations, and guide the next generation of forestry professionals. We’re grateful for his leadership and dedication to the industry.

Larson & McGowin is excited to welcome Alec Spychalski to the team as the Forest Manager for our Southeast Georgia properties! In this role, Alec will provide continuous management of client lands while also supporting our land management and analytical teams. Alec is passionate about the balance between silvicultural and financial management, ensuring that timberlands remain a sustainable natural resource for generations to come. He wants people to understand that forestry is first and foremost about safeguarding timberlands—while harvesting timber is a major part of the industry, decades of research and practice have allowed forestry professionals to generate strong economic returns while serving as dedicated stewards of the environment. His goals at L&M include applying his knowledge and skills to enhance timberland management while also expanding his expertise in land sales. Above all, he’s eager to continue growing into the best forestry professional he can be. Originally from Nashville, TN, Alec spent the last seven years in Knoxville for school and work before making the move to Southeast Georgia. When he’s not in the woods, you can find him fly fishing, training his bird dog, tying flies, spending time with good friends, and enjoying Tarantino movies. Welcome to the team, Alec! We’re glad to have you at Larson & McGowin.
