Slide decks aren’t the problem—it’s you. ?? I'm half kidding. It may not be you, but you’ve likely seen people misuse slides, treating them like giant index cards. And you may have given in to this form of use, I did at one point (and if I’m honest I still slip up from time to time). But after years of learning, training, and facilitating, I’ve realized that slide decks can be a great tool—but one that a lot of people don’t optimize. Slides aren’t meant to summarize *everything* you’ve said. They’re there to enhance your storytelling, visually translate key points, engage your audience with quizzes or videos, break up the flow, and even add surprise elements to wake people up. We’re not all auditory learners, so completely leaving out any visual aid can actually do a disservice to your audience. Am I saying you need to use slides all the time? No, sometimes they aren’t necessary. But I am saying consider them a tool that can elevate your message, if done correctly. The key? Use them in unexpected, creative ways. Way back in 1946, Darryl F. Zanuck, head of 20th Century Fox, once said, “Television won’t be able to hold on to any market it captures after the first six months. People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night.” As you can guess, that didn’t exactly happen. People still watch TV—whether through streaming services, cable, or even DVDs (and maybe VHS tapes for some of you). The point is: It’s not the tool that becomes irrelevant, but how we use it. Slide decks are no different. Don’t toss them out altogether—find creative ways to use them to make what you’re saying stand out. What are your thoughts? I often share how each person can impact an organization, and that won’t be changing anytime soon because I believe it wholeheartedly. In a May 2024 Sage Journal Article, Emotional Intelligence (EQ), or more specifically, Relationship Intelligence (RQ), was highlighted in how it is pivotal in workplaces functionality, both in Western and Eastern contexts. What’s particularly important is that this applies not just to senior roles. It’s about relationships at every level—how teammates interact, engage, and influence each other. The impact that is measured isn't only about leadership but also how individuals collaborate across the team. While some forms of organizational impact are more process or systems-driven, not all contributions follow that path. Different types of impact—whether relational or task-based—play a vital role in driving an organization’s success. How each person contributes may look different, but growth is the end goal in all cases. The more people recognize, accept, and implement this, the stronger the workplace becomes. What actions are you taking to increase productivity?
Workshop Facilitator & Speaker | Learning and Development Manager| ??Enhancing workplace growth with education and inspiration | Author & Military Spouse
In theory, every organization wants to be the best, in culture and in what they create or produce. However, I often notice that the discussion specifically around productivity jump straight to creating a one-size-fits-all path to productivity. The reality is, there’s no single solution. While engagement, is often highlighted as the key, the truth is that many factors influence productivity, including: Time Culture Technology Engagement Skills / Job Fit Support / Resources In my article, I focus on the variances we should consider when looking to increase productivity: https://lnkd.in/efzagwkS Illustration by me. #professionaldevelopment #productivity #engagement

What created the most effective training you have ever attended?
Workshop Facilitator & Speaker | Learning and Development Manager| ??Enhancing workplace growth with education and inspiration | Author & Military Spouse
Knowing the purpose of training is one thing, but delivering it in a way that aligns with the learner needs is another. Have you ever attended training and thought, "Why am I here? Who needs this?" Or finished the session with thought, "What the heck am I supposed to do with this?" I'm just going to say it—I’ve asked every single one of those questions and I bet you have too. The reason we feel this way is because our purpose for being there—voluntary or not—doesn't align with the resources or knowledge presented in the training. To build a stronger workforce, the training employees receive must clearly outline what we want them to do. The tools provided shouldn’t feel like a scavenger hunt for "How will this help?" The training should be something learners can easily recognize is helpful and apply. For example, if employees attend a Performance Improvement training, what should they be doing afterward? What actions or behavior changes are expected? How can that happen? If they only needed the knowledge, they could access it elsewhere, but they are at that training; and so the training must show how to enhance their skills or abilities and how to apply what they've learned that reading alone won't. Start by making the goal clear internally ( facilitator and/ or designer), then ensure the training delivers knowledge, resources, and practical strategies for learners to put it into practice. If you are still reading this, I have a question for you: What factors created the best training you ever attended? How are you enriching your work life?
Workshop Facilitator & Speaker | Learning and Development Manager| ??Enhancing workplace growth with education and inspiration | Author & Military Spouse
Something I’ve had to remind myself of lately is that professional development requires more than just work in the workplace. Just like a recipe that needs multiple ingredients, enriching your professional life involves additional factors—such as hobbies, continuous learning, networking, family, personal development, and more. Going beyond the basic of ‘work only’ is essential for growth. Illustration by me. #professionaldevelopment

Can comparison help us to notice things?
Workshop Facilitator & Speaker | Learning and Development Manager| ??Enhancing workplace growth with education and inspiration | Author & Military Spouse
We often villainize comparison, seeing only its dangers. However, comparison can also reveal truths. Equal effort doesn't always yield identical results; the results can (and many times do) come in different forms. But with comparison, we are able to acknowledge and address this, which is crucial for growth and development. What are your thoughts? Illustration by me. #professionaldevelopment

Hey Everyone! I’ve been a bit sparse here on LinkedIn, but I’ve been meeting great people and having wonderful conversations outside of this platform. I recently had a conversation with Matt Gjertsen on the podcast "Leadership Launchpad" about overcoming communication barriers that affect how we show up at work. If you have 30 minutes, I hope you’ll take a listen. The link is in the comments below. #professionaldevelopment #leadership
