Did ewe know that sheep graze in these vineyards all year round? ???? While some wine estates bring in the “woolly weeders” for certain periods, such as after harvest or in the spring, the LangeTwins make a permanent home for this flock at their family-owned property in Lodi. But how do they keep these enthusiast grazers from eating the grapes? “A handful of blocks have a trellis system height at 65 inches on average which keeps the sheep from nibbling the fruit and only taking a small portion of the low hanging canopy. This allows the sheep to focus on summer weeds, particularly under-vine.” Sustainable, “farm-first” initiatives such as year-round sheep grazing to keep weeds at bay is one of the reasons why the LangeTwins Family Winery and Vineyards won the California Green Medal Leader Award in 2024. “For us, sustainability isn’t just a checkbox,” they say. “It’s our mission, a commitment to our land, community, and future generations.” ??
