Study in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures to learn about different ways of life by living them!
关于我们
Students majoring in Foreign Languages and Literatures at ECU develop cultural competence by learning to communicate (read, write, speak) effectively in another language. They acquire the capacity to understand, appreciate and interact with people from cultures with different world views or belief systems, and commit to lifelong learning. Students analyze various forms of cultural expression critically and develop a cross-cultural sensibility needed in a wide variety of professional settings. Our graduating majors thus have a unique set of skills preparing them for successful careers in the information-driven, interconnected, and multilingual twenty-first century. The faculty in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures inspire students to reflect on what it means to be a global citizen and to think critically about world cultures. While developing proficiency in a foreign language, students study abroad, conduct research, embrace diversity, and engage with the communities in which they live. By studying in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, you’ll learn about different ways of life by living them!

One of our Foreign Language Education majors, Mikaela Trank, has been awarded the Foreign Language Association of North Carolina’s Jane Mitchell and Manolita Buck Honorary Scholarship. When asked about her scholarship inspiration and future, Trank said, “My inspiration comes from the people who speak the language! I was able to spend time in the Dominican Republic in 2019, and I fell in love with the children I met there. After returning home, I wanted to deepen my knowledge of Spanish and communicate more effectively with people in the Hispanic/Latino community. From there, my love for sharing the language and culture grew. I hope to teach new generations about the languages and cultures I love and create a safe space for them to share their own. My time in Argentina was essential for this, as it allowed me to learn about a new culture and fall in love with the city of Buenos Aires. I learned how to communicate respectfully with others and navigate cultural norms. My advice for any prospective language student is to go abroad—immersing yourself in a different culture and language is the best way to learn and grow! In my future career, I plan to provide my students with every opportunity to experience authentic cultural elements from around the world and offer them opportunities to travel virtually or in person.”
