We were pleased to consult with Wind Dancer Sailing Adventures on their decision to replace their schooner's aluminum masts and assist with a proposal to present to the Coast Guard for "in-kind" replacement. This included detail on best practices in sleeving aluminum mast sections and isolating dissimilar metals. Maemere (aka High Spirits) was only a few days away from being cut up in California when Earl McMillen rescued her and shipped her back to Rhode Island. Langan Design is collaborating with McMillen Yachts on the structural upgrades that will make the yacht better than new, while bringing the hull shape back to its original true lines. Project Highlight: Encouraged by the owner, who wanted a unique space, we designed this in-home theater to mimic the look and feel of a classic yacht interior, similar to what we do on large motor yachts. This was a truly collaborative project Jerry Kirby, the principal at KIRBY PERKINS CONSTRUCTION, INC. was the general contractor who offered the initial concept. Taste Design was responsible for the interior design for the rest of the house and assisted with fabrics and wall coverings in the theater. Newport Yacht Builders handled the custom construction and millwork. They were also intimately involved with acoustics and sound insulation and all the fabrication details. Fall sightings: S/Y Angel, an 83’ sloop that was built by Yachting Developments, completed a yard visit late last year at Lyman Morse Shipyard. She was one of the last sailboat projects that Bill Langan oversaw and won line honors in her class at the 2012 Newport Bermuda Race. The 95-foot cold-molded composite yacht “Project Ouzel” gained a deck house this fall and increasingly took on the look of the full-fledged sailing yacht that will launch later next year. Builder Sam Temple at Rockport Marine says, “With the added elevation of the deck house, the effect has been to accentuate the low sheer and further articulate the harmonious styling of the whole.
