In today’s rapidly urbanizing world, where development timelines can stretch over months or even years, the concept of "interim parks" offers a refreshing solution for cities and communities. Instead of leaving buildings shuttered or lots vacant while awaiting redevelopment, forward-thinking developers are embracing a new strategy: transforming these dormant sites into vibrant, temporary public parks that enhance the urban realm and bring value to the community. Landworks Studio has been working in this capacity for several years, with projects across Taichung, Taiwan led by Pao Huei Development, that demonstrate how thoughtful design can turn transitional spaces into valuable community resources. What are your thoughts on interim parks? Would you like to see more of these transitional spaces in your community? #urbandesign #construction #development #landscapearchitecture #publicparks

A resilient future waterfront for Portland, Maine ... envisioned! The Harvard University Graduate School of Design studio was honored to be part of the Envision Resilience Challenge this year. The students gave their final presentations last week and are grateful for our guest critics and their feedback: “We were blown away by the development of design concepts for the waterfront and wharves. The toolkit with near term, mid term and long term approaches of protect, integrate and embrace is really such an incredible tool for the community. The long-term thinking in particular was innovative and bold. Kudos to the students for taking on such challenging topics with a courageous?approach?and for delivering such visually compelling graphics. We know that community engagement was a curiosity and a priority for your students, and that was clear throughout?that presentation?of the work.” “The work your students produced is amazing! Very impressive, and they should be proud of all their hard work. Congratulations to you all!” ?????? Stay tuned for a community Open House display in Portland on February 7th and for a document of the full outcomes ...

  • Congratulations to Michele Turrini and Kongyun He for earning the 3rd Prize in The Last Nuclear Bomb Memorial Competition. We're so proud of your achievement!

I'm excited to share that our project, The Scrutiny, has been awarded 3rd Prize in The Last Nuclear Bomb Memorial Competition! The competition sought designs for decommissioned nuclear testing sites that would not only memorialize the lives lost but also advocate for a total ban on nuclear weapons. The Scrutiny challenges the competition brief with its bold positioning of the memorial—not on nuclear test sites, but in a location that holds significant value in demanding accountability and calling for scrutiny and change. Since no text or annotations were allowed, I’ll let our graphics speak for themselves. You can view our winning entry here: https://lnkd.in/esi-i88y A big thank you to Architecture Competitions // Buildner for hosting this competition and giving us the opportunity to explore such thought-provoking designs, and to the jury for recognizing our work. Shoutout to my partner and collaborator on this project, Michele Turrini, and special thanks to Sam Valentine for the invaluable feedback! This project was a fun and imaginative conceptual design exercise for us, and we’d love to hear your thoughts or feedback! If you’re interested in learning more about the project or our process, please feel free to reach out—I’d be more than happy to discuss it further. Cheers!

  • It was a pleasure having Dustin on our team this summer.?He quickly became an integral part of our group, contributing to graphics and video production for an international competition, mentoring undergraduate interns in 3D printing, and working through pre-concept for a local historic site. His hard work and creativity were truly impressive, and we'd gladly welcome him back anytime!

Dustin Del Moro is a rising third year student in the school and is our next featured summer intern. - What firm/organization are you interning for and where is it located? This summer I am in Salem, MA at?Landworks Studio, Inc.?. Salem is a historic coastal town 45 minutes north of Boston via commuter rail. The city is full of beautiful architecture, breathtaking beaches, and embraces its history as the witch city. - What type of projects do they work on? The firm works primarily in commercial and public spaces with projects in both the US and abroad. - How many employees work at the firm? Landworks has a studio in both Salem, MA and Taipei, Taiwan. Between the two offices there are around 25 people and 2-3 dogs. It’s amazing seeing how the two offices coordinate and it’s always exciting to see what the Taipei office has been working on while I was asleep. - What sort of projects have you had the opportunity to work on? I have been working on a large range of projects from competition work overseas to a reimagining of a historic property in Salem. This dynamic range of work is representative of Landworks’ portfolio and their involvement in the community of Salem. - What do you like most about the work you are doing? I really enjoy the range of representational strategies, technology, and workflows that we are encouraged to utilize. I have been working on renders in lumion and photoshop, animations in blender, filmmaking in After Effects, audio editing in Audacity, modeling in Rhino, scripting in grasshopper, and sketching/physical model making. I also enjoy the office culture which includes weekly lunches on Wednesdays and regular 5:00pm pickleball games. (I’m getting better!) - Have you had the opportunity to experience any interesting spaces or landscapes in the area? This past weekend I cycled the entire Emerald Necklace in Boston. (Photos 5-6) The iconic park system is unbelievably beautiful and a vital green artery running through the fabric of downtown. My favorite links are Jamaica Pond, Olmsted Park, and Riverway. I’m looking forward to spending an entire day at the Arnold Arboretum.
